Set The Scene For Horizon Wars From Osprey Publishing
January 23, 2016 by brennon
The new Sci-Fi rules from Osprey Games, Horizon Wars, are now available to pre-order with a release date of April 2016. See what you think of the cover and some background information...
"Beyond today's horizons lie uncountable wars still to be fought by mankind - on battlefields, against foes, and with weapons that can only be imagined. With Horizon Wars, wargamers can bring these future conflicts to the tabletop, no matter their exact vision of the future of warfare.
Combining the feel of real-world combat and tactics with versatile and quick-to-learn rules, Horizon Wars is a 6mm company-level game that incorporates ground forces, aircraft and the titans of the battlefield - mechs. Whether you want to pit a handful of mechs against each other in quick clash of patrols, or line up combined-arms forces for a huge battle, the game remains fast-moving and enjoyable.
Also included are full rules for building units from the ground up, allowing players to tailor their forces to suit the mission objectives or their figure collections."
This sounds like it could well be a neat investment if you want to get stuck into full on Sci-Fi battles with mechs and more.
Have you heard much about this game?

This looks interesting.
So with Age of Tyrants, Polyversal and the return of Epic to GW 6mm is getting a lot of attention…..
The sad truth is will have to hold out from investing in one of these till we see what comes out on top.
It looks great. I am very much into this kind of scale…. But what mini do you buy? You guys know some very well designed and sculpted mini range in this scale other than the GW?
Are you thinking 6 or 15mm
…if you are thinking of trying something in 15mm sci-fi then have a look at ‘tomorrows war’.
Khurasian Miniatures do some nice smaller stuff.
For 15mm this site is the place

What about Hawk Wargaming, I love their minis but it seems the game does not translate to an open table rather than urban combat.
Most Scifi sets have unit and vehicle building rules. Just make your own stats up for them
I’ll be using Drop ship commander and my Ogre miniatures I also have some Plasma blast and Khurasan 6mm to road out the number of armies I can put on the table.
nice.
I’ve been able to pick up the old Mech-warrior heroclixs boosters for cheap they be awesome for this. Infantry, tanks and giant mechs all pre-painted to a decent quality.
The beauty with these sorts of rules is that you can use whatever you have
Hi. I’m this book’s author. The book features miniatures from EM4 (plastic mechs and aircraft), Brigade Models, Angel Barracks, 15mm.co.uk, Ground Zero Games, Reaper Miniatures, Wargames Emporium and Microworld Games. There are literally dozens of other small manufacturers, like Onslaught Miniatures, Plasmablast Games and Troublemaker Games. When you factor in that the rules are designed for ranges between 2mm and 10mm, you also get Dream Pod 9, Hawk Wargames and Spartan Games (I’ve even used Dystopian Wars minis to play). Then consider that minis from larger scales can also work (Ghar battle suits and drones for Gates of Antares make… Read more »
So basically, you got this covered? 😉
Are there any plans for an official line of minis to accompany the game as with Frostgrave? Or does that go against the intent of being an open setting?
There are no plans for an “official” line of Horizon Wars miniatures, but I’m talking to a couple of companies about helping them turn their existing range into good Horizon Wars starter kits. I certainly don’t have the wherewithal to develop miniatures (tried it once – nearly went bankrupt). Whether that changes will depend a bit on how the game goes, sales-wise. But as the game began from wanting to write a game that was as cheap to get into as possible, I’d feel like a hypocrite if I started telling people they had to use *my* models to play… Read more »
Sounds perfectly reasonable to me!
Thanks, I look forward to read this book.
Hi,
That sounds really interesting. I wonder, is it primarily squad-based (as in 3-4 tanks or stands of infantry activating together) or model-based (1 large tank or mech at a time)?
The base rules are alternating activation by element. So one player activates an element, then the other player activates an element. But you can upgrade some elements to be a squadron commander allowing them to activate multiple elements (of the same type, in range) in one go.
I’m working on a battle report to illustrate how the game works, which I’ll post on my blog (http://precinctomega.co.uk/wp) when it’s finished.
Just listened to you pod cast. Seems like Salute is going to be interesting 🙂 see you there
Do come by and say “hello”. I love putting faces to names. There may be selfies!
Hi
I think I have bought products from all the from companies you mentioned
Nice to see an author pop in and spend some time with us. Thanks and welcome!
Plasmablast are nice but closed at the moment while they go through a change if ownership. I think it’s really a relocating of an office as at the moment them being in Greece they are having problems with money coming in and out of the country especially with paypal
Sounds like I’m re-purposing some battletech minis!
A handy, inexpensive way to get more games out of your already existing armies like Age of Tyrants, Firestorm Planetfall, Dronzone Commander and such.
It is! I hope it will also be an excuse for people to discover the many excellent manufacturers of game-neutral 6mm and small scale minis out there. They don’t get the press they deserve because there does tend to be a fixation on miniatures that are for dedicated games.
Congratulations on getting it in nice print Robey!
I’m buying into this have got some 6mm infantry and robots from gzg and will get some modern tanks and aircraft from Herosandrons. Was wondering in relation to infantry how many per stand and will be seeing infantry types ie light infantry, armoured infantry and power armoured infantry?
The game includes light, heavy, airborne and mobile infantry.
The number of minis per stand is entirely dependent on your taste. I use three, bit that’s because I’m cheap.
