The SAS Drive Out in Perry Miniature Jeeps
October 10, 2014 by dracs
Perry Miniatures have presented a couple of previews showing their upcoming SAS Jeeps which will soon be driving out into the heat of North Africa.
As you can read in the information Perry have provided in the images, these jeep sets will feature plenty of options to allow you to assemble them to fit whatever needs your army might have.
Even in this early stage of design, the model as a whole looks promising. It will definitely fit in as part of any British army desert force and I particularly like that a couple of the heads are shown with goggles and head covering cloth in order to deal with the sand while moving at speed.
Can any of you tell us more about the history of the SAS and their involvement in this particular area of WWII?
It is the Birth of the SAS. The history channel has a show called great raids. Look for the episode SAS vs Rommel. It covers this period fairly well. I know that the SAS was formed during this time. I believe by a Major Sterling. The whole purpose was to conduct raids and deny Rommel the supplies he needed to conduct the war in the desert. They targeted the airbases in the rear and destroyed the aircraft and supplies on the ground. It is truly amazing how much he/they accomplished with how little.
I’m tempted to pick these up for a diorama.
LRDG list for Bolt Action anyone?
I think they used a lot of captured German vehicles to blend in better as well.
nice jeeps all the same.
Major David Stirling and his men formed the SAS in 1943, I believe.
In 1944 they also deployed in their jeeps to France, to harrass the Germans there.
So, gamewise, both Europe and Africa are a go.
Real life: incredible guys of which i had the good fortune to meet 3 in Bosnia in 1994.
Look up LRDG – that is where it started.
You can’t have enough jeeps 😛
Im worried they will be different size than warlord´s ones.
I wouldn’t the Perry’s and Warlord work together behind the scenes a lot. Even if they are a little off. The Jeeps themselves were made by several different manufacturer and there were differences. Not to mention the SAS modded the ones they used fairly heavily anyway. So a few differences will be easily passed off.
So I’m starting to plan a Bolt Action game – 4 of these jeeps vs German airfield defenders. Objective, destroy the fuel dump\ fuel truck. Bonus points for taking out a plane on ground. Probably have a satchel charge rule, set it and then each turn roll to see if it goes off. It’s all still in the works
So these should be proper scale for BA?
