SAGA Grand Melee 2014 Kicks Off 7th & 8th Of June!
May 27, 2014 by brennon
The SAGA Grand Melee 2014 with Gripping Beast will be taking place over the weekend of 7th and 8th of June. As well as battling it out with a range of different factions you'll also get your hands on a rather cool standard bearer and possibly a massive haul of prizes...
A full run down of the rules and such can be found HERE and you can buy tickets for the event HERE from Firestorm Games. Of course it wouldn't be a massive tournament of dark age proportions without a miniature on offer right?
This banner bearer will come on both his display base and a normal one for use on the battlefield. He will be available nowhere else so if you do really like the look of him AND you play a lot of SAGA then this could be the tournament for you. He even comes with that very cool looking banner with the Raven of Odin looking down on your enemies.
Put your enemy to the axe!

I’ve been dreading this weekend for a while as I can’t go 🙁
Saga tournaments are great fun, I’d recommend going even if you haven’t played a lot .
They always well supported by Gripping Beast with lots of goodies.
It being in Cardiff put the kibosh on my attending as it’d mean a lot of petrol and spending most of Friday and Monday driving. Hopefully the next one is a little closer.
The head looks too big… again.
Are these run just once a year as am thinking of trying this game out and would like to catch the next one.?
On a related note I’m thinking Norse Gael as I believe they are a Viking army that can use the Dane axe, am I correct in thinking this?
I think these are once a year – although they do them in other countries as well. I think there was one in Germany at one point.
As for Dane Axes for Norse Gael I don’t know I’m afraid. @huscarle will though I bet ;). I only have the main rulebook/factions.
The Grand melee is once a year but there a lot of other tournaments through the year run by clubs. If you go to the studio tomahawk website then look under the challenge to battle you will find tournies advertised.
Norse gaels can indeed use Dane Axes and not just the Hearthguard their warriors can have them as well.
Must admit I’m drawn to the Viking based armies but I’ve heard about drawbacks to Jomsvikings and their wrath mechanic (I believe that’s what it’s called).
Some viking advice from Mr @huscarle would be most appreciated.
The Joms are good. I don’t use them myself but I did struggle a bit against them when they first came out. Now I don’t let them build up their wrath and get into them as quickly as possible.
They are a good a place to start as any though. Whatever faction you pick you’ll sure to stuggle with one of the others.
You should be able to play the Vikings and the Jomsvikings using the same minis.
Snap
What I’m trying to say is there is no uber faction and no really weak ones. I would pick the one you feel an affinity for and use them as they were intended. The skill is in using the battleboard correctly as they are geared up differently for each faction.
If you choose carefully you can use the core of one faction to build a different one. Joms can be your normal everyday viking, Normans can double up as Bretons.
Well I am initially drawn to the Norse Gaels so that’s the way to go for me. I’ll keep an eye out for club run events too, cheers matey.
Good call . Dane Axes what’s not to like.
Uh oh . . . queue up the “Vikings” TV music theme.
“If I had a heart I could love you . . .”
Oh, Lagertha. I don’t need a “heart” to love you. 🙂
