Revolutionary Rules in Land of the Free From Osprey Publishing
September 30, 2014 by stvitusdancern
Historical gamers will be very excited to hear that Osprey Publishing is taking pre-orders right now for Land of the Free: Wargames Rules for North America 1754-1815!
Land of the Free is a new set of wargaming rules from Osprey that allow players to recreate the various conflicts that broke out in North America around the time of it's Independence. This allows the game to include elements from the French and Indian Wars, the Revolutionary War and even the War of 1812. This format gives players the ability to start their campaigns with small warbands of 10-20 miniatures of any scale (use what you have!) and develop their forces over time, building them into much stronger and larger armies- which is great in case you don't have hundreds of mini's right out of the gate!
The book includes:
- History of North America – French and Indian War to the War of 1812
- Rules
- Army Lists
- Escalation League
- Campaign
- Missions
- Hobby Guide

War of 1812 *cough* 😉
lol oops 🙂
Skirmish rules that can scale up to larger Battles sounds like it’s worth looking at as an introductory game down the club. I’ll be sure to check it out especially as there are lots of cool minis on the market for this period.
Im sad Osprey do not choose one format / style for their wargaming rules, (the blue one preferably) I’d buy all of them just so they match on my shelf then, I only own three so far so…
looks good! no doubt have to pick up a copy of that as well as On the Seven Seas…
Hello everyone and thanks for the interest in the rules. I had a lot of fun writing the rules and I truly hope you enjoy them. The description above is a little misleading and I don’t want you to be disappointed with the book. There are no ‘official’ escalation or campaign rules in the book. There are several ‘generic’ scenarios allowing you to play one off or competitive games. There are also 20 historical refights from all 4 of the wars covered in the book. Finally, there is no hobby guide but there are plenty of inspirational pictures of miniatures… Read more »
Looks good…. have tons of AWI miniatures already….. seems to be a lock…. 🙂
Thanks. This month’s issue of WI talks about the game to give you a little more insight into the rules.
