Return To Middle-earth With New Made To Order Sets Soon
January 23, 2023 by brennon
Games Workshop will soon be putting more of the classic Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game range up on their webstore as part of their Made To Order scheme. The focus is on The Two Towers (since it was the anniversary of the film last year in December!) and characters from Rohan and beyond.
Theoden, King Of Rohan // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game

It makes sense that we start things off with King Theoden himself. This is a pretty awesome version of the character because it represents the unarmoured version of him that you might remember from the Warg Attack. I think they've captured the grim features of Bernard Hill quite nicely there and Snowmane looks awesome too. With the sword held aloft, this would be a solid character to pick up if you're looking to play out that particular scenario.
The same could be said for Gamling, Theoden's faithful captain. A lot of folks will have the version of him with the King's Banner but I like this, again, as an accompaniment to the moment of the Warg Attack.
Gamling, Captain Of Rohan // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
He also matches very well alongside the on-foot version of Gamling that you get inside the Heroes Of Helm's Deep set which is also returning for another outing.
Heroes Of Helm's Deep // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
This set comes with a lot of my favourite miniatures. It's one of my favourite depictions of Eowyn (from a deleted scene where she fought Uruk-Hai in the Glittering Caves) and also the Three Hunters, Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas. You've also got the dour Theoden and Gamling (one of my favourite Middle-earth characters) and Haldir, accompanied by one of his Galadhrim Banner Bearers. A solid set for the collector out there!
Sticking with the good guys, we also have this fun vignette of Gimli sitting pretty on forty-three.

Again, a nice collector's piece and something that would be fun to add to a bigger diorama or just show off on the shelf with the rest of your collection.
The Forces Of Evil!
The forces of evil are not to be outdone and they are getting themselves this classic Warg Riders set complete with three cunning warriors. Two are armed with bows whilst another carries a spear.
Warg Riders // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
Oh, and don't forget the gnashing jaws of the Wargs that these Orcs are riding that are going to be a match for even the most stalwart of Rohan's riders.
You are also going to need to smash down the gates of Helm's Deep and for that, you need an Uruk-Hai Battering Ram I reckon!
Uruk-Hai With Battering Ram // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
Another solid scenario-based release from this Made To Order run. The Wargs will be useful when mixed with the plastic kits to provide you with enough hunters to chase down Rohan's refugees. The Uruk-Hai Battering Ram can then be marched up the causeway to break down the gates of Helm's Deep so your terrible warriors can get inside and butcher the defenders!
Adventuring In Ithilien
If you want to play out a different tale then how about the journey of Sam, Frodo and Gollum as they make their way to Mordor?
Frodo, Sam & Gollum In Ithilien // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
You can get the pair of brave Hobbits as they take a moment in the wilds of Ithilien whilst Gollum snacks on a fish or two. Wandering there is dangerous business and I'm sure a ranger or two might end up stumbling across them and inquiring as to their destination.
Those Rangers are also coming back in metal and would be great additions to the existing plastic line that you might have picked up with Battle Of Osgiliath. They look great and would be worth picking up if you're looking to do Battle Companies as well I'd reckon.
Rangers Of Ithilien // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
As the temptation of Men grows stronger, the Nazgul find it easier to hunt out The One Ring and so perhaps you'd like to add this classic metal Ringwraith On Fell Beast to your collection. Don't worry, the wings are plastic!
Ringwraith On Fell Beast // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
I'm not sure I'm quite up to that hobby challenge (balance this if you dare) but I like that it comes with that version of Frodo who is moments away from putting on The Ring!
Maybe the defenders of Osgiliath have been chased from the ruins of that once fair city by the Nazgul and you need to save them? That's where Gandalf The White comes in, a classic old metal pairing of both the foot and mounted variety.
Gandalf The White // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
You could also use this Gandalf The White to relieve the defenders of Helm's Deep with the aid of Eomer (or Erkenbrand if you want to go more book-specific). A great line-up of old metal miniatures from the archives for those seeking to play out fun scenarios and more in Middle-earth.
Could you be tempted by some of these sets when they go up for Made To Order? I have most of these so I reckon I'd only really be seeking those metal Rangers!

GW almost has me with LotR but it’s just to hefty of a price tag :S
It’s hilarious/disheartening to realise that I actually own so much of these releases already. Hells, Theoden I’ve painted, stripped and repainted twice since he came out in the Warg Attack box.
That mounted Gamling is rather tempting though as I never finished converting the banner bearing version to just have a sword. Maybe worth revisiting to turn into Hama instead….
It’s amazing how these old LotR miniatures still hold up so well. I guess that’s testament to skill and talent of the Perry brothers have.
GW really did bring their A-game to the LOTR licence back in the day. And I know we tend to give the older plastic kits a (not always unfair) knock these days, but at the time they really were something special in terms of quality and the number of minis you got to a kit.
Fantastic game figures.
I’ll be pickup up Gimli On Dead Uruk-Hai as its a mini I’ve always wanted and just never managed to get hold of, I don’t think I have the unarmoured Théoden either so that’s another possible mini to add to the collection.
The sculpts on these really are timeless and its a testament to the brilliant work of the Perry twins.
