Red Alert! Skirmishing In Modiphius’ Star Trek Adventures
April 16, 2018 by brennon
Modiphius has plenty of awesome content out there for those role-playing in Star Trek Adventures. However, they have also put together the first look at their Red Alert Skirmish Rules.
"With Star Trek Adventures: Red Alert, your gaming group can add an exciting three-dimensional tactical experience to your RPG encounters. Now, Federation away teams can do battle against Klingon warriors, Romulan strike teams, Borg drones, or any number of other threats on far-flung worlds across the Galaxy.
Whether you’re a seasoned veteran of tabletop campaigns or a fresh-from-the-academy redshirt, you’ll soon be controlling your own away team and battling over the fate of worlds or the entire Galaxy!"
This is rather awesome and means that while you might not have a member of your group ready to role-play, you could always play out a fight instead using this free download.
So you're aware you also need...
- The Star Trek Adventures core rulebook
- Star Trek Adventures miniatures
- Star Trek Adventures tilesets
- At least two 20-sided dice (d20) per player
- Several 6-sided dice (d6) to serve as Challenge Dice
- Two sets of six tokens for Momentum and Threat
We'd love for you to tell us what you think of this ruleset in the comments below. I wouldn't want to come up against the Romulans or the Klingons!
Drop your thoughts below on this little side project from Modiphius.
Will you be giving this a go?

Predicted rules for this:
A roll of 1-20 always auto hits Redshirts.
Redshirts always fail a save on a roll of 1-20.
Am I close? 😛
don’t forget :
if a hero is shot at and a red shirt is near then the latter is automatically hit … 😉
Why would Picard or Riker or high ranking officers of the admirality or any other red shirt character be instantly shot??? This notion is clearly flawed.
(Don’t worry I do understand where this is coming from and I genuinely like the humour in it. It’s just fun to push this joke even further. 😉 And also there is the slightly earnest question what qualifies as red shirt in what instance. There is a discepancy.)
Also when fighting non-mooks, all the Redshirt rules apply to Worf.
And if the player playing Picard can make a sufficiently pithy speech, the Starfleet team auto wins the scenario.
The player playing Bones is contractually obliged to say “Damnit Jim, I’m a Doctor, not a X” whenever asked to do anything non-medical related.
Make it so.
they looks great…hopefully this will lead to a stand alone Skirmish game.
Until a better system i use star saga….
They do have some great models.
So, why would you need The Star Trek Adventures core rulebook?
You need to core rule book for the miniature stats, you basically also have to calculate the points values and make you older own character sheets.
In my opinion a clever move since they are giving the rules away for free …
…make your own…
Any Star Trek skirmish game is going to run into issues and a challenge to make playable and thematic.
I downloaded the rules – I’d recommend anyone interested actually does – for me they are convoluted and not intuitive to play. But then its an add-on to a RPG and in that way it will make those players happy. A stand alone skirmish setting needs a lot more work.
As said “an add-on to the RPG”, if you like Trek, get the free rules, if you like them, get the RPG!
