Recreate Naval Battles with Topside Minis Kickstarter
November 12, 2014 by stvitusdancern
Now you can recreate 18 WWII Atlantic naval battles with 400 new ships and planes representing Great Britain, France, Germany, & Italy in a great Kickstarter! Topside Minis has launched their Topside Minis Naval War Gaming Miniatures Atlantic Fleet project.
This is a really clever game where each unit consists of a 3mm wood base and a ship or plane image printed on adhesive backed water resistant paper. It couldn't be easier to bring a large scale battle to your table top. The gamer cuts the game pieces and peels and sticks them onto the corresponding wooden pieces. In a matter of minutes, you have a fleet ready to command!
What do you think of this peel and play naval game?
This is neat but why not just produce a print and play game? Wouldn’t it be just as easy to sell the “models” printed on a nice, thick card or as PDFs for those who want to print their own? The wooden bases seem like an unnecessary cost.
I agree and I would add that I’d like to see the stickers being sold alone. Then we could cut out cardstock, MDF, hell … sheet metal … if we so desired and throw the stickers on what we want. Also perhaps decals would be a cool second option as well.
Sorry, silly idea.So they remove the “hassle” of painting a 1/2400 miniature (which are v cheap btw) And add the fiddliness of peeling and sticking a bit of sticky paper to some wood??? I don’t get it.
I think it is an ok option for some folks. I agree about the 1/2400 comment though that stuff is really affordable. I guess that the draw though is that some people want old AH/GMT style games though with chits. Also with this type of system you can easily store and transport big fleets (which is where my interest lies). I wouldn’t mind owning some of these in addition to the stuff I have. I would like to see them sell just the stickers and/or decals at really low prices and then I’d be more than happy to cut MDF… Read more »
Wonder why they didn’t print the basic stats on the stickers, a la wargame chits.
I can see the a-peel! (groan)
Oh @chibi you silly cat/bird please don’t quit your day job.
It is my day job
I don’t make much for some reason 🙁
So… taking that one step further, why don’t they print the card with stats, and leave a place in the middle where you could glue down a ship model?
Also, looking at the hex size in the first photo, I’m thinking you would need to play this on a gym floor.
Miss Peristroika with a triple flip half pike and …oh dear how unfortunate, Miss Peristroika has slipped on USS Lexington!
I hope she is unhurt….
no… it’s okay, the Lexington is undamaged and can still continue
And according to the Russians the incident never occurred.
If only the Lexington had fared as well at Coral Sea. 🙁
Late to the thread @chibi , but that peel joke was funny. Then again, my sense of humor is usually about the “Three Stooges” level anyway. 🙂
Not sure it gets that far up the funny ladder! lol
I’ve been looking at this stuff for a long time, I’ve seen many positive reviews and I love the concept. I might still go in on this one. My biggest complaint about this KS though is how it is laid out. This is really not a user friendly KS. They should clearly define what you get for each pledge level (like HOW MANY SHIPS). Sure they link you to lists and after several steps you can figure it out, but look at most of the more well designed KS projects and they have done that work for you. These guys… Read more »
Do you guys this will work with Fred Jane’s, Don Featherstone’s, Fletcher Pratt’s, or Phil Dunn’s wargaming rules?
Different looks interesting.
Can someone explain how bits of wood with stickers on them qualifies as “miniatures”. This would make a great sicker book for my Grandson.
Edit: “Sticker Book”
Well I guess the stickers aren’t that big 😛
