Prodos Announces PG13 Resculpts For Space Crusade
February 14, 2016 by deltagamegirl22
Following the recent conversations around the mature content of the recently released, Space Crusade, Prodos Games has announced that they will be making a PG13 Version of the game as well.
This is in response to the multitude of emails they received regarding concern for appropriateness for a younger audience as well as the overall comfort level of some gamers with the level of flesh revealed in the sculpts.
They have included the first resculpt of one of the heroines, Calypso, who not only looks beautiful, but is decked out in full body armour.
What do you think of the idea of resculpts for Space Crusade?

To me it wasn’t whether the models were PG13 or not, it was a case of who would be so stupid as to design an armoured spacesuit with the whole torso missing. I suppose PG13 edition sounds better than admitting they were moronic with their designs…
I loved their designs. This is a campaign against “bikini Armour” is total stupid and a farce.
(i) Power armour idea does not work. If it really works, we would be using power armour and not tanks.
(ii) We would be force sculptors to make miniatures all plate armour. … i.e. the walking garage bags.
I hit the brass necks upper lip with my comment. Keep it coming.
Keep them coming…..

Seriously, you would put someone into combat whose torso protection is only a flimsy bra/loincloth?
Don’t give up your day job, you’ll never make it as a general 😉
And the reason we use tanks over power armour in the real world is that we have the technology to produce tanks already and the power armour tech is still under development.
Buddy do please waste your national budget into researching power armor. Please do ask your MP.
Yeah cause, research was never needed to invent a tank, or anything else. If you are not going to have a credible argument, shhhh and leave the talking to the grown ups. 😉
You mean the same grown ups playing with toy soldiers? Have you considered a career into politics?
I suspect, that most of the negative reaction came from individuals who got angry after the AVP kickstarter and took advantage of this situation. None of the rabble-rousers have the moral courage to point his fingers companies like Raging Heroes, Infinity and Kingdom Death.
What a big shame this community is heading!
I find it cowardy to do this after showing first sculpts. If they really wanted to go with what they did then they should had kept that instead of doing this because they were forced to.
So they should keep a nonsense design just because thats what they came up with first? Hmm…
Yes because backing down makes them seem like cowards for not going with they original intended audience instead of admiting that they should not had went with those in first place.
It’s not cowardly at all. The original designs are still available, these were done in response to a large number of requests. It’d be silly to ignore such an opportunity of max reward for min effort.
I wouldn’t say its minimum effort. They have to pay sculptors, make moulds and cast product of all these “PG-13” miniatures. That’s a not-insignificant investment. They must be expecting to be able to turn a profit from the sale of the PG-13 stuff, although I daresay the damage is done and they won’t turn a profit on the new miniatures, at least not short term. They might find a market eventually as proxy Sisters of Battle though.
It’s business which has nothing to do with being cowardly or brave, more to do with protecting brand image. They made a poor judgement call in the first place, received a bag load of poor PR and made an adjustment.
Or they could admit it was a stupid idea and they’ve made changes due to feedback. I would not think them cowardly for making such a change and I’d respect them more if they said ‘yea that was stoopid, we shouldn’t of done it’.
It’s not so much that they’ve changed anything. They are still selling the original miniatures and, according to a post by them, the original designs are selling better than the full armoured re-sculpts.
I don’t criticise them for offering the alternative, but they haven’t changed anything, they’ve just added to the range.
Or, it might give the impression that they listen to their potential customer base.
The original sculpts were not some great show of courage. They were just minis that bothered a lot of people and garnered a lot of criticism.
In all honesty I think looking like cowards is the least of their problems. They’ve gone very, very niche with this.
Going niche with an IP as cherished as Space Crusade is absolutely idiotic. I’m baffled.
This is just one big miss from Prodos, I think they totally misread what their customer base actually wants.
Maybe, however as they have said, pre-sales for this product have been higher than some of their best selling Warzone products; Warzone is a range that can probably lauded for its female miniatures. Go figure.
Is this for real? Who were the idiots that complained about their original sculpts? This is backwards thinking and back to the middle ages. A great shame on the community for this.
I hope this does not kills Prodos drive to make original and fascinating sculpts…….
If you think “bikini models with armored sleeves and skulls borrowed from space marines” are original and fascinating, then I imagine I just found who the target audience for Bayformers franchise is! Seriously, I have a number of models with naked parts, or indeed fully naked. I have no problem with tits on my toy soldiers. The problem with the models was that they were just..useless. There was literally no concept behind them. There was too much dissonance between the armored limbs, and the totally unarmored torsos. It wasn’t armor designed to look sexy, it was the very definition of… Read more »
Just to inform you guys not defend Prodos, they meet expectation with that game in bikini armour, they have enough pre orders from what I hear from Daka dakka, they are doing it. But I agree that is bad PR in general, I have 3 years old daughter she play games with me and I will not like to show her models like this on gaming table. They not sexy or pin ups, they just silly and wrong in my opinion, I am glad that they intoduced new version, I am also collector gamer and painter, I would love to… Read more »
In fact, I wish they redid they sculpts as pin ups now!
I agree. If they had gone for an artistic pinups style that could have been interesting even if it is not what I am into. That could have had merit. Instead they did a clumsy hatchet job on an aggerated 40k style and crow barred ridiculous big breasts in to appeal to a simplistic ‘sex sells’ marketing strategy that is frankly bordering on offensive because there was nothing original or nuanced to it. These resculpts are simply an effort to make their product more palatable now that their frankly cynical decision to sex up their game has so clearly backfired.… Read more »
Personally, I wasn’t a fan of the original sculpts, I not massively keen on the new concept; it’s got the Space Crusade moniker but it isn’t creating that spark of nostalgia for me. If anything I think it looks a bit too dark and serious, Space Crusade was over the top and cheesy. But I can see a little bit of bias creeping in here. When you say they have sculpted “ridiculous [sic] big breasts” onto the models, having been back and looked at them the breasts aren’t really unrealistically large. There are some factors that might be creating an… Read more »
I guess there is not much to talk with proto space fascist fanboy. At least, Bayformers fanboys are civilized enough do not pick the torches and forks for some naked butt.
You’ve heard it lads, criticism of any idea, as long as it has T&A, is now equal to an angry lynch mob.The second you put a model in assless chaps, the second it becomes immune to criticism!
As I said not much to talk about. Shall I ask Prodos to make 28mm PC police to suit your sensibility?
The product barely got announced and they’ve got alternate sculpts ready to go …
Considering how fast they managed to add the ‘censored’/realistic variant I kind of doubt they did this just to appeal to “idiots who complained”.
I’m not sure why anyone who disagreed with the artistic direction of a game has to be labelled an idiot though.
The world isn’t black&white.
If anything Prodos are doing the only thing that should have been done by default : provide options for everyone when doing a ‘sexist’ product.
Besides … we still don’t know if the game itself is worth buying.
These are renders based on the already revealed models. All they did was put a breastplate back on.
‘Different’ is not always ‘better’. Ponder that for a minute… 😉
Is this for real? Who were the idiots that complained about their original sculpts? This is backwards thinking and back to the middle ages. A great shame on the community for this.
I hope this does not kills Prodos drive to make original and fascinating sculpts…….
Look, go to your puddle of 4chan, men’s rights, proto-‘libertarian’, Sargon of Akkad, perpetual victimhood. You’re not a hero fighting fascists on the beaches of Normandy, you’re a child shrieking that you don’t want to have to continue to grow up and consider others anymore. You have completely insulated yourself from any criticism by assuming any and all who disagree with you must be part of the great ‘feminazi’, SJW, PC conspiracy. Why it should be so frightening to see women as people like you I’ll never understand. One last thing, to call these sculpts from Prodos “original and fascinating”… Read more »
Or maybe @linuxnavigator is just one of those people who is prepared to let people enjoy the things they like without other wanting to dictate what those things should be. Or maybe he actually likes the models and is sick of being told he’s sexist for liking them when that isn’t really an indicator of whether he is sexist or not. I can see why people complain about “feminism” and “feminazis” when arguments like this arise and the term “SJW” is the generally accepted for people who cruise around the internet looking for stuff that offends their sensibilities. However it… Read more »
I be fair my comment original and fascinating referred to Prodos product line in general. I like what they done on WZR and AVP.
I was never a big fan of 40k and this model line was so bad that is actually good. In essence it represents the excesses of 40k in such a crude form that I laughed at them….. In short I liked them.
Dear little conservative onion marinated in mice s***, while the likes you enjoy playing toy soldiers as if you are a general at Waterloo (please here reference the end credits of Robin William’s Toys). Note that the rest of the civilized world looks that 28mm miniatures as toys, which indeed they are. If you wish to play boardgames with children, you might give a try with Ravensburger. I am sure that there is a game which may get all the family excited. Meanwhile, Prodos decided to have a go with the bare chest SPuz Marines, pretty much a board game… Read more »
“Conservative onion” made me smile 🙂
Prodos haven’t actually said that they are doing these PG13 models because of the negative reaction. -quote- Hi there, product will be released, also now… there probably will be a PG13 version due 60+ emails I gone through this morning with a request to make this game more accessible for kids. Surprisingly, retail is more interested in 18+ version. -End quote- Prodos don’t care what the community thinks, see the calling AVP backers thread on the forums for a taste. I’d argue and say people complaining about “40k: the porn parody” is actually a step in the right direction for… Read more »
Oh dear now we are up to the 40k porn parody. Are we seriously going down the holier than thou route here?
SO PLAYING GAMES WERE PEOPLE ARE KILLING EACH OTHER IS OKEY BUT BIKINI ARMOUR IS WRONG… Jesus …
Fair point. But to me it comes down to suspension of disbelief. I like sculpts I can get behind, and through imagination, emotionally invest in. I can’t do that if it’s Jenna Jameson twerking with a poweraxe. Funnily enough, I’m a big Infinity fan and Nomad player, and the reason I didn’t buy the Mobile Brigada set was because they made the female Brigadas a) tiny, b) boob-armoured and c) high-heeled. Did it offend my sociopolitical sensibilities? Well, yeah. But worse than that, it looked freaking stupid. It’s just not for me. I also acknowledge that not everything has to… Read more »
You might unlike my comments but in the meantime I went to buy off those miniatures to support Prodos …. I voted with my pocket. There is a fun place were you might take your comments.
Well, personally, I didn’t ‘unlike’ your comments. I don’t judge people on their taste in miniatures. And I’m glad you supported the project financially. Too many people claim they like something, and then don’t put up the cash. But there was a massive number of people keen to see Space Crusade come back. And it seems like the majority of them are running away from this as fast as possible. Which is not good business. I just think it’s a shame to remake a game that was very inclusive and popular as something adult and very niche. In fact, I… Read more »
Personally, I was not going to get into this game. I simply do not like the fascism inherit in 40K. Then again, when I saw this title. I reconsidered to have a second look and liked it much.
Boobs fan gamers ? Is not Slannesh part of the 40K lore or people are trying to ham-fist 40k as a serous game … which is not.
40k is a beer and prenzel game for teenagers and the underboob fits perfectly. Trying to hide this, and sell it as kids game is wrong.
I don’t want the game and I can take or leave the nudity but I have to say, every arse hole complaining about the makes me want to buy the game just to spite them.
When I see these minis 40k porn parody is my first thought, if the demons had tentacles my first thought would have been 40k the hentai.
How is that holier than thou?
And it’s not bikini armour here, that at least would be something this is just a bikini. The sculpts here (to me )make no sense why wouldn’t you have any armour protecting your torso and genitals.
Prodos arent a small company in this industry they should be able to make something original with their talent, (this is not original or good)
They have chosen not to.
And no I’ve not down voted you.
Seems like a good move to me. As long as it works for them commercially, why not provide options?
Well, I was excited about Space Crusade because I thought, “great, a game I can play with my kids!” Because let’s face it, the original Space Crusade was not only very accessible, it was also a brilliant game with a very clever and clean system. Then I saw the sculpts. And I kind of recoiled. Now, I’m not a fundamentalist on this. If people want exposed flesh on their miniatures, if they want pornography to bleed into tabletop gaming, that’s their choice. I don’t like it, and I won’t do it, but if others get pleasure from that, fine. But… Read more »
I was also excited when I heard the rumours that Prodos has secured the Space Crusade trademark and were producing a game. When I saw the original pre-orders I had a brief moment of disappointment before I moved on with my life. However I currently own a copy of the original Space Crusade and I can tell you it isn’t one of the best sci-fi board games ever made. It was amazing when I was 12 but having played it recently it’s not a great game at all in terms of the rules (and the miniatures are a bit dated… Read more »
Prodos… a steaming pile of bad ideas.
Don’t know enough about them to wholeheartedly support that statement, but in this instance, yes. It’s a wretchedly bad idea.
Vengeful ghost of kickstarter past, I cast you out from the Lord’s herd and back into the earth you belong.
Kids should play what they want and not want their parents want. And let us be frank …. if you wanted to play a board game out there, there are plenty of games out there. However, the Spanish inquisition got haste here.
Can kids afford to buy this game?
You’d be surprised at what kids can afford when they really really want to.
That’s why you see them with ipads and mobile phones.
Although to be fair it probably is easier to convince (grand)parents of the use for those things.
Still baffled by this. Wasn’t Space Crusade a GW product…? Back in the day, it was available in supermarkets and toy shops. It was massively popular, and appealed to all ages. It was a gateway drug into 40k. GW could have released it with the same board, the same rules, the same dice, and just refreshed the sculpts, and it would have sold by the shedload to a new generation of 40k fanatic. This isn’t a case of dropping the ball, business-wise. This is a case of throwing the ball overarm into the toilet, jumping on the flush a hundred… Read more »
I’m not sure if they could reprint it without Milton Bradley attached. From what I understand about the new version, GW allowed the trademark to lapse (probably intentionally) so Prodos snapped up the name.
The way I see it Prodos got lucky in nabbing the IP which was out of copyright and thought they would lure in lots of adolescent males with some TnA sculpts . Sorry chaps but based on the huge raft of negative commentary clearly gamers are looking for something less Razzle and a bit more Dazzle 🙂
Is this not just toy soldiers?? or are you trying to solve the worlds ill’s by starting small scale lol.
Pathetic!!
buttons top right.
Everybody wants to rule the world. Some start off small….
[Is this not just toy soldiers?? or are you trying to exacerbate the worlds ill’s by starting small scale lol.

Fixed that for you 😉
lol , great stuff!
Fight the power!!!!
It’s not just toy soldiers. It’s Patriarchy. Or something.
I suspect the whole exercise was done for marketing purposes. From the pictures I saw I’m not even convinced the minis existed as they looked rendered to me
I am frankly disgusted by comments made by parents who state that they do not want to play space crusade with their children simply because of underboob. Space marines is an idea taken from starship troopers’ novel which meant to make fun of fascism. However, 40k instead gloried fascism. And teaching kids to shoot enemies because they are different or of different ideology is wrong … period. I will definitely not teach my children this and I will make sure to understand why. What Prodos did with Space Crusade was brilliant and the 40k’s ultimately form. The board game that… Read more »
Wasn’t going to join in any further than what I said above but I felt I had to on this one. The facism comment’s either way or ultimately irrelevant when we’re talking about children. Anything that’s implied, related, connected, or in the background can easily be taken out of the equation by virtue of the fact that they wont understand the reference. For comparison see all the innuendo in kids films, does not harm to the kids and provides some entertainment for the adults. The reason I as a parent don’t like the underboob or nudity generally is because it’s… Read more »
Sorry, but I find it to be intellectually dishonest blasting this product for the sake of nudity when there is the elephant of the room with 40k being a glorying fascism (And now try to guess why 40k is not so popular in non English speaking countries). I personally think this is what that IP needed, a sarcastic note. A please “do not take us seriously and was only a board game for when you were a teenager” punch line. The point were we differ. Children do not have the background, connection or experience to understand the political context of… Read more »
I think you’re overplaying the facism glorification in 40k to be honest. But since I’m not up on the background enough I can’t have a reasonable debate.
Ill bite on the lazy parenting though, what is lazy exactly about saying I don’t want to expose my daughter to a group of objectified, unnecessarily sexualised women? I’ve looked at it, made the call that it’s not suitable and will therefore not buy it. This seems an entirely reasonable and correct course of action.
At least allow the fact that people have different sensibility and I will stop with that issue.
Pardon me but I do have to understand why this happens to the graphic representative of wrong sexual exposure for them while, Bardie dolls are not? At least these miniatures are so disproportionate as Barbie.
And are you offended by the miniatures because they half naked females?
Why Heman is okey and these are not?
I just do not get it?
I just do not see consistence in the argument.
@linuxnavigator not sure why I can reply to my own comment but not yours so tagging here. To be clear on my position. I agree completely that different people have (and are entitled to) different sensibilities. My first comment on this thread was that I believe providing the option was great. And I am fine with the fact that the not pg13 versions exist, if people want them that’s absolutely their business. I’m just saying i don’t, and I think they have the potential to be viewed negatively in terms of the hobby being inclusive. On the Barbie thing, I… Read more »
@superfurrymaniac I think we differ on the opinions. In itself state your opinion on this subject is not wrong but you were one of the few who did this in an articulated manner. I am on the opinion there is no middle ground on this subject and no toeing. Closing an eye if the doll is out of any human proportions or if the other doll is a moral hero simply does not cut the line with me. Following this line of thought than we should cover all ancient art because of nudity. A follow the other line of though,… Read more »
Company releases game with minis that verge on being for a mature audience. Section of the community says this will put them off buying the game. Prodos make a version more suitable for a younger audience to go along with original version. Seems like a non-story to me. Not sure why people are losing their s***. For the record, not only have I argued for sexualised representations of minis on this here site before, I’ve argued for pornography in general. I’ve also argued against -isms in gaming and the things we do which make us exclusionary. It’s all about context,… Read more »
Looks like both versions are available, with exception of the bikes (not the bikers) wasnt a single mini i liked the look of, just looked like a crap cash in on kingdom death notoriety combined with power armor, still on the plus side the pg13 ones could be used as SoB proxies, until GW (unless they tomb king them) redo in plastic…
Classic case of not being able to please everyone. When they put the original pre-orders up, nudity and all, the usual social justice warrioirs were up in arms. Then they released an alternative version that did away with the nudity so you could buy the flavour of your choice and the social justice villains (I don’t really know what to call them) were up in arms that Prodos had somehow capitulated. Don’t they teach Aesop’s Fables in school any more? I’m sure he had something to say about this. I do wonder though, how many of the people complaining, on… Read more »
So tired of companies caving in to nut job feminazis and PC morons who think they have some inherent right to dictate the creative vision of an artist. Funny thing is prolly 3/4 of those emails are from people who never had any intention to purchase the game wether or not it had fully armoured warriors. To hell with Prodos anyways their CEO Jarek is a crook who deserves nothing less than bankruptcy.
I will not judge but, I would not definitely not tell my kids ..”Burn the Heretic”. Probable the kids would laugh their ass off and go play minecraft.
Couldn’t give a rat’s ass if the original sculpts were sexist or not etc etc. What bugged me was the armoured people except their whole torso wasn’t armoured. I’d have the same opinion if it was male sculpts with naked torsos. I’d like the concept to at least somewhat make sense.
That’s part of the problem with the recent GW designs, too: Armor that’s insufficient where it’s needed, and/or absurdly overbuilt where it isn’t necessary.
We have seen that happen too often in video game industry with recently Tecmo not publishing DOAX3 for US markets and Capcom censoring R. Mika’s butt slap and Cammy’s crotch shot in SFV to gator people that don’t would not even buy those games in first place but some how have influence. Sadly it seems like even our hobby is not safe from those people.
Loving the high horse of “fighting the evil PCs” martyrdom when most comments just point out how idiotic and bad the design was.
This. I like boobs. I don’t like boobs in contexts where the boobage is so completely and absurdly out of place. There’s tasteful nudity, and there’s sexy nudity, and then there’s “OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS 14-YEAR-OLD BOYS AND IMMATURE MEN! LOOKET THA BEWBZ!!!”
Or mature men playing with fully dressed dolls.
Taste is a somewhat personal opinion. One man’s meat is another man’s poison and all that.
Being a parent who games with his children I could not happily have purchased the original Prodos version of this game. The PG13 version I am more likely to purchase. Will there be PG13 ‘versions of the add-on figures? Some of these as they currently stand would be unacceptable to me for gaming with my children. I still have an intact copy of the original Space Crusade game with the Eldar and Dreadnought add-ons, so would love to see a good pre-release.
I will not judge but, I would not definitely not tell my kids ..”Burn the Heretic”. Probable the kids would laugh their ass off and go play minecraft.
There’s a lot of films I wouldn’t happily watch with my kids. It doesn’t mean I wouldn’t ever watch those films, I’d just do so when they’re not around.
It’s OK to make stuff and aim it at an adult audience. Not everything is, or should be, suitable for children.
I love my cheesecake as well as serious minis but I have to admit they did a pisspoor job with trying to make them look baddass and sexy at the same time. If they were wearing form fitting armour with some parts exposed for a bit of spice that would be one thing but those goofy 40k arnour designs chopped up to expose some boob is pretty sad looking. Wanting to change it cause the sculpt is a joke is cool wanting to change it cause it offends you (oh how people love playing the victim these days) is bs… Read more »
True they could have done a better job. But bikini armor all the way.
Calypso looks good.
The originals just look like unofficial 40k pinups, while these just look wannabe 40k. it’s fine if you’re into that sort of thing but neither interest me.
Also this whole argument of “we need to cover up our little plastic/resin/metal women” is stupid considering no one is asking to cover up ripped bare chested men. It all depends on the art style I suppose but unless you’re doing historical or modern you shouldn’t complain too much about a model looking unrealistic
Finally, somebody who made a comment with some salt in his head. I was wondering if I fell down the rabbit hole. A Douche made a comment insulting Prodos got 4 likes and I made s sensible articulated comments hit the unlike thumbs down galore.
Welcome to the internet.
“I made s sensible articulated comments”
Still waiting for them.
You can find them where the sun is not shining.
To me the originals weren’t artistic pinup girls (your mileage may vary). They were clunky, clumsy and ridiculous. Something that heavily armoured head to toe but leaves the unnaturally ample bosoms of the apparently all female squad inexplicably exposed? Hmm. A classic pinup well executed should appeal to both genders, I really don;t think those did. My wife certainly eye rolled hard. It falls far on the wrong side of the taste line for many people which is where the response is coming from. There are plenty of examples of minis out there which pull off sexy but (at least… Read more »
No they obviously weren’t intended to be pinups but they have that feel, like a slutty cosplay or some Slaanesh stuff on deviant art. Also like I said it’s silly to argue for realism with things like this.
Not everything should appeal to everyone and I’m sure there are female fans of both the original sculpts and the PG versions, even if they’re a small minority.
Finally! The future brings the big guns I’ve been looking for.
The old sculpts weren’t rated M for Mature, they were rated R for Retarded. As in turned back in progress.
Progress? Please explain.
I’m more interested in their AVP range but given how they handled it i’ve still not jumped on it as a boycot.
As for ‘this’? Besides the fact it is an all girl team which seems absurd… unless you were aiming at the eroticism aspect (which i think given the initial versions was the case), is silly.
But overall they don’t even look that good when improved.
On top of that their enemies leave me rather ‘meh’ also.
I’ll skip this one.
