Pre-Order Warlord Games’ 2nd Edition Hail Caesar Rulebook
November 14, 2022 by brennon
Warlord Games is now taking pre-orders for the 2nd Edition version of the Hail Caesar rules. So, if you're diving into wargaming ranging from Ancient times through the Medieval, you might want to snag these updated rules for your armies.
Hail Caesar Rulebook - 2nd Edition // Warlord Games
Hail Caesar continues to provide a set of massed-battle wargaming rules designed to allow you to play out some of the biggest battles from the Ancient period through to the clashes between England and France during the Medieval era and beyond. It's a solid set of rules that a lot of folks have been using for many, many years.
Hail Caesar Rulebook 2nd Edition - Interior // Warlord Games
Rick Priestley has updated the Hail Caesar rules with additional features such as rules for playing out sieges. The timeline has also been extended to include the likes of the Hundred Years' War and the War Of The Roses. I think the core of the Hail Caesar experience seems (to me at least) to be around the Ancient period and making mighty armies of Romans, Greeks and more.
Hail Caesar Rulebook 2nd Edition - Collector's Edition // Warlord Games
As well as getting your hands on the Hail Caesar Rulebook, pre-orders of both the standard and collector's edition also get you a 28mm resin miniature representing King Richard I, The Lionheart. He comes with different head options and a deadly battle axe.
Hail Caesar Boxed Sets
If a new rulebook has piqued your interest, what about diving straight in with a couple of starter set options? The first of these is Caesar's Gallic Wars where Romans are clashing with the barbarians at the fringes of their empire.
Caesar's Gallic Wars Starter Set // Warlord Games
Inside, the set contains a Gamer's Edition of the new Rulebook alongside an introductory guide that introduces you to the Gallic Wars period. You then get eighty plastic Gallic Celtic Infantry going up against fourty-eight Caesarian Roman Infantry. The set also comes with a set of Shield Decals for both sides, twelve dice, a reference sheet and some casualty counters.
If you're more tempted by just the Gallic side of things then you might want to pick up this Celt Starter Army.
Gallic Celt Starter Army // Warlord Games
This set comes with a Celtic Chieftain and twelve Celt Cavalry both in Warlord Resin. You then get 100 (yes, 100) Celt Warriors alongside the appropriate Command Figures. All of those regular troops come in plastic. Again, you get loads of Shield Decals to decorate all of those shields they have at the ready to deflect incoming pilum.
Could you be tempted by the new rulebook for your existing force or will you be snapping up an army as well?

Fabulous looking figures to get an game with.
Worst looking figures; Victrix and others are vastly superior.
At least Alessio doesn’t seem to be involved any longer with the company.
I still have a Teutoburg Forest collection, mainly Victrix, unbuilt.
I’ve never been a fan of Hail Caesar. Playing it always felt like the red headed stepchild of a liaison between Warhammer Fantasy Battles and an early 70s set of historical rules. Alas it’s got a fair bit of “HeroHammer” to it (where your general is the most powerful unit just like in WFB, just without the magic).
It gives a quick game however, and if you enjoyed WFB games, you’ll probably enjoy Hail Caesar.
are you sure you’re thinking of the right game, generals in HC only have a leadership value and no other stats, there are rules for attaching commanders to units but even then there are no fixed values just suggestions that you and your opponent have to decide what you think is appropriate, and that comes at a cost of making them more likely to be killed in the combat.
From memory leaders add either 3 or 6 dice in combat. There are a few special abilities they can have but again from memory there usually for morale rolls
nope, it’s entirely up to you and your opponent the only stipulation is reserve commanders are capped at 1. So if you want to go for a 6 dice general you can but it means you’ll be killed or injured on a 6+ on 2d6
It’s been a few years, but I remember playing Macedonians vs Romans and Alexander and his bodyguard Companions Cav just hit some Roman horse on one flank and basically rolled up the whole Roman line solo before the Macedonian Pikes even got into combat (silly amount of dice being rolled for that “general”). Most Warlord games rules aren’t strictly a “simulation” but tend to be written to give a good game (thankfully they DO manage to publish the rules in one book unlike GW). I much preferred Clash of Spears for 28mm gaming recently, but I do usually prefer a… Read more »
