August 20, 2024 by brennon
Following the announcements of the new edition of the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game and the Rise Of Angmar supplement, pre-orders are going to be firing up this weekend. You'll be able to get your hands on the new Rise Of Angmar book and a host of new and returning miniatures from Games Workshop.
Rise Of Angmar // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
Shop Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game @ Store.OnTableTop
This book will cover the fall of Arnor and the rise of Angmar as the Witch-king begins to wield his power in the name of the Dark Lord. A bunch of profiles will be included for new heroes and villains as well as new army lists and seven Legendary Legions for you to choose from.
There will also be twenty-two narrative scenarios which cover the battles between Arnor and Angmar as well as a campaign system which links them all together. You'll also find plenty of background lore and there's even a painting masterclass covering haunted ruins.
New Middle-earth Miniatures
As you might have seen during previous previews, there are lots of new Forge World Resin miniatures coming to support this supplement. Mighty heroes for the forces of Good will be leading the way.
Aranarth & Argadir, Heroes Of Arnor // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
Earnur, The Last King Of Gondor // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
You can get your hands on the champions of Arnor and the Last King Of Gondor who will be fighting plenty of valiant last stands. It's a bit of a shame that Aranarth is stuck in the same pack as another miniature as I sort of just wanted him but it wouldn't be terrible as the other miniature is still very nice!
Finishing things off for the forces of Good in Forge World Resin, you can also get the Knights Of Arnor which add a mounted element to your Arnor forces on the tabletop.
Knights Of Arnor // Middle-earth Strategy Game
On the Evil side of things, a terrible wraith and a sneaky, backstabbing Orc are going to be coming to the tabletop. You'll be able to get your hands on Nazthak, and The Shadow Of Rhudaur set which will give you a few awesome Angmar-themed "heroes" for you to throw into the mix.
Nazthak And The Shadow Of Rhudaur, Heroes Of Angmar // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
You'll also be able to pick up Aldrac & Fraecht for those wanting to lead a Warriors Of Carn Dum force on the tabletop. You could of course mix and match your Carn Dum forces with plenty of Orcs but I quite like the idea of a full force of these grim humans.
Aldrac & Fraecht, Heroes Of Carn Dum // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
As well as Aldrac and Fraecht, you'll also be able to get your hands on a set of six Warriors. It should be mentioned again that these are all Forge World Resin miniatures and so will come with a heftier price tag but we shall have to wait and see exactly what that is.
Warriors Of Carn Dum // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
This set of Warriors will give you a solid starting point for a Carn Dum-themed force. The Captain and Banner Bearer will offer you a leader for your warband and the Banner Bearer will be securing you some re-rolls.
Last but not least for the first wave of Rise Of Angmar releases, we have the Werewolves Of Angmar.
Werewolves Of Angmar // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
This means that the big Hill Trolls won't be coming out this weekend. I imagine that you won't have long to wait and I could see them popping up next week, especially as by that point folks might have their books and will be seeking to plan out new army lists.
Returning Middle-earth Miniatures
As well as all of the new Forge World Resin miniatures, you'll also be able to pick up a whole bunch of old metal miniatures for Arnor and beyond.
King Arvedui & Malbeth The Seer // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
King Arvedui & Malbeth The Seer are going to be key purchases for anyone wanting to build an Arnor army. They will form the backbone of your force and are important characters in the unfolding narrative of the fall of Arnor.
Kings Of Men // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
Gulavhar, The Terror Of Arnor // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
As well as additional sets like the Kings Of Men and Gulavhar, you'll also be able to get Cirdan and Erestor, Lords Of The Dunedain, the Shade of Angmar and more. All of these are classic miniatures that have been very hard to get your hands on over the last few years.
One of the most welcome returns comes in the form of the metal Warriors Of Arnor Warband.
Warriors Of Arnor Warband // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
This will give you the core of your Arnor force, and much like the Men Of Carn Dum, it comes with a Captain and a Banner Bearer. Armed with their spears and shields and clad in decent armour, these Warriors Of Arnor might yet put up quite the fight against the forces of the Witch-king.
One of my favourite sets, the Rangers Of The North, will also be returning and will find themselves part of a new Legendary Legion no doubt as well as protecting the fringes of The Shire against marauding enemies.
Rangers Of The North // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
The Dunedain of the North will also be making a return, allowing you to make an army made of heroes if you so desire. It's a good way of cutting down on the amount of painting you have to do at any rate!
All of these miniatures are going to be available to pre-order this weekend making a lot of Middle-earth fans very happy.
Will you be picking any of these miniatures up?

From the GW site, wrt New Edition MESBG “The recently announced Rise of Angmar™ supplement was written for the current edition, and as such will also cease to be valid for Matched Play upon the release of the new edition. We are well aware of the short shelf-life of Rise of Angmar™ and wanted to make sure that you, our customers, have all the information before you purchase it. Rise of Angmar™ is a chance for collectors to wrap up the current edition of the game with the last supplement for it, and still contains plenty of exciting Matched Play… Read more »
Yep, that stings but at least they told us. I can see a lot of people just ignoring this or buying the miniatures and waiting for the free PDF updates for the new edition.
But the changes to MESBG sound rather good. I gave up after 10 or so years when ‘The Hobbit’ version of the game came out – just too many rules for my simple brain (different weapons, trolls throwing people or barging them or such like etc). Also I never quite liked the squad system for army selection. I much preferred the original with its 30 figure limit – Evil was some huge monster or two plus 28 orcs or goblins, whilst Good was as many of the Fellowship as your points could afford! This new version might tempt me back,… Read more »
