Powered Play Declares Let There Be LED Light!
April 8, 2013 by dracs
In the past we have loved showing off the great miniatures people have made, incorporating lights and sounds to bring them to life, but we have always thought such things beyond us. Now Powered Play are starting a kickstarter to hopefully allow us to do the same.
The idea behind this kickstarter is to create a product which allows those of us who aren't exactly the most technically minded to achieve those great LED light effects we have seen people sporting on their miniatures.
"We’ve come up with a modular kit that lets you only have to worry about where you want to run the effects. Simply drill your holes, run the wires and plug it in. This design puts the control and creative decisions in your hands. You can do what you want with your models, where you want it, with the colors and effects of your choice."
This kit is certainly an interesting idea. It is true that most of us probably don't have the skill or time needed to fully wire up a light show for our miniatures, so this kickstarter could make such effects more accessible.
What are your thoughts? Is this a useful product, or is it simply unneeded?
This is great! Would add a real cool cinematic feel to gaming. I like it.
Very, very cool.
Bit too flashy for my tastes.
Aww c’mon! Someone was gonna say it!
Mhhh if there is some kind of crazy dreadball board with lights bellow ( yeah the ultimate dreadball board! ) that will be a must for me.
TBH I thought that is what the article was about when I saw the little thumbnail
My Stompa’s Gaze of Mork would look fantastic with this!
I’m not a fan of overdoing it (it looks more like “christmas time” than “war time”) but on the odd alien ship or building, or for magical effects, or on a watchtower with searchlights, that could be great !
My main concern is that, to me, the tanks and drop pods looked very toy-like with those lights on, instead of looking like tanks. Too much “toy” and not enough “model”…
So… Is it interesting ? Definitely ! But I think less is more.
Given they are promising smoke and sound as well, I am tempted to agree.
Electronic pew pew sounds and tinny gunfire would drive me nuts! lol
GW models get more toy like as it is imho. Not sure this would provide the the ambience to transcend that.
Each to their own.
FWIW it might be checking out leds that modellers use already to add lighting effects.
It makes me think that the colours are a bit too garish on these, although the photos may be enhancing the lighting effects for erm effect? lol
Thanks for the comments. The video was shot in lower lighting than you would expect to find at a game store or tournament. We tried in normal lighting but the video didn’t catch the effect very well and I am completely opposed to Photshop (or whatever) for effect. On the gaming table it is… if not subtle certainly less garish. Mostly we just wanted to make a tool that anyone could use to add lighting effects where they wanted them. BTW, if you have already checked out the Kickstarter we’ve updated the stretch goals to make them more enticing… Let… Read more »
If the drop pods had a single light the pulsed it would look like a beacon. That would totally work. I admire the endeavor non the less.
Also hope the next video will be much more still as it was real hard to see what was what.
