Ponder On The Scenarios For Studio Tomahawk’s Congo
April 9, 2015 by brennon
Not long ago we talked about a new game coming out of Studio Tomahawk called Congo which had you playing as explorers, tribesmen, slavers and more in the darkest depths of Africa. Since then we've seen some more preview images of the game in action and it makes us think of some really cool stories yet to be told!
The first thing that sprung out at me was a look at some of the factions for the game which you can see above. As well as the European 'settlers' you have the native tribesmen from the region. It looks like it's going to be skirmish level gaming, to the same degree that SAGA is, with a decent number of miniatures per side but nothing too unwieldy.
These pictures, while also quite hilarious (especially the rhino one) also could potentially hint at the game having secret terrain that comes out to attack both sides as you're playing. I love this kind of narrative tabletop experience and I hope that becomes the case. Africa does have a lot of wildlife after all.
Talking of wildlife see what you make of this solitary great ape. Maybe this is the one that the cannibals worship for his supernatural long life and strength? Here's where the game could easily drop into Pulp, Punk, Horror & Weird territory!
Is your interest in Congo growing?

That ape looks brilliant. There are a few ranges of animals out there as well. I know North Star do an African animal range.
haha yeah I also particularly liked the look of the Gorilla
This looks remarkably like Two Hour Wargames ‘Adventures In The Lost Lands, which came out in 2010! written by Ed Teixeira. This was not a full professional glossy publication, nor did it promote a particular figure manufacturer, but it was cheap (especially the pdf download version) and played very nicely. There was no IGO-UGO to be found here, all reactions to what the other player/s did, catered for solo, collaborative as well as competitive play, you could even play the dinosaurs if you so wished. Unfortunately it is no longer in print by them!
So indeed it plays under 2 / 2,5 hours. Games are quick and fun. Mobility is key, the issue is you often have more groups to move than you can so it feels a bit like too much movement restrain.
Intrigued at what direction they are going to take this
I’m currently playing the campaign that came soon after titled “Mungo Mah Lobeh”. It’s fun even if it feels unbalanced (I’ve been unable to win a game and we played 4 out of six parts is dues to both of us not completely mastering the rules, because we didn’t play often enough). But the setting is nice and the campaign is well designed and the books are awesome.
