Pick Up Blood Bowl Star Player Varag Ghoul-Chewer From Forge World
February 11, 2017 by brennon
Forge World has released another Star Player onto the Blood Bowl pitch as we turn out attention to Varag Ghoul-Chewer, stomping his way onto the pitch in search of something to crush.
If you're looking for an Orc with a bit more between his ears this might be the player for you...
"Unusually tactical and thoughtful, Varag Ghoul-Chewer is almost unique – an Orc Blitzer capable of making rudimentary strategic decisions! Dragged up into the big leagues and placed at the head of the Gouged Eye – the most famous Orc team currently playing – his sights are set on winning the Blood Bowl championship."
The model looks a lot of fun and it's neat to see they've continued to show off some quirky additions like the Squig Ball you see clutched in his gauntleted hand.
Are you an Orc player looking for a star signing?

I’m not keen on him. I preferred his previous metal incarnation. This one looks a bit derpy. The ball squig is a nice touch though.
I do like how there seems to be that little humour, fun, element still in the sculpt – the same as my original 90’s orcs. Makes me excited to see the planned goblin box, I might not always have won but they were fun to play and fun miniatures and hopefully they keep that fun in the sculpts.
I don’t recall the old version but this one seems to be in line with the other orcs and that’s fine with me.
All the “Exclusive”,”Limited Time” marketing for BB from GW and Forge world has really turned me away from the game. Want a snow pitch? Too late, they were available for 2 days. Want a Forge World Ref? Too late, they were available until Jan 23rd (not that they ever actually told anyone). Bring stuff out, and keep it out. All this “flash pan” marketing really get on my nerves. But for the rest of you, you better snap one up before they get withdrawn from availability again (although why they can’t just spin the molds again I’ll never know). As… Read more »
I don’t think forgeworld are guilty the same way as the parent GW on this occasion. They will make more Varags.
Yeah I totally agree…
But I am not to sure what to do about it, when I studied marketing and how they do those sorts of things, there was this one company that got rid of the sales style mentality and they went into the sink not long after the CEO got fired and all of that sort of stuff.
What I would like is rather than exclusive that maybe once in a blue moon they do actually do a sale.
The exclusives have all been cosmetic. The teams and the star players are all readily available. The pitches went fast but GW have promised to run another batch and there are heaps of companies doing pitches and dugouts for Bloodbowl. The refs were available for months and were advertised from the start as being a limited release.
But why do a limited release? You’ve already incurred the cost of the master, molds need to be replaced anyway (a resin mold is usually good for 20 pulls before it starts to degrade, yes thats why minis cost money…the mold doesn’t last that long). Only reason is pure marketing policy to “drive” sales. Problem is for me, this causes uncertainty of availability and that means that this drives my spending to whatever GW determines it to be (rather than when its convenient for me). I personally object to pressure sales techniques. Sure GW can do whatever they want. And… Read more »
As a sculpt this does nothing for me, like the rest of the Orc redo lacking character. Shame as a lot of stuff coming out is great. Still I have my old orcs waiting a slot on the paint table. @phaidknott I believe pitches will be back. They where pretty clear on the refs availability. However, I do thing there have been a lot of choices that have been made on the release model that are fairly poor and certainly have put me off. I grabbed new humans off e-bay and I am picking up odd star players. Rest is… Read more »
That looks like fun sculpt. Since I have not seen old one I can’t compare it to this new FW version.
I think this is a bit of a disappointing sculpt too. I’m probably remembring the original with a heavy dose of nostalgia, but it seemed more characterful. This one has more ‘stuff’ than the blitzers from the box, but doesn’t have more character. When I look at his face I don’t feel like I’m looking at one of the more thoughtful orcs in Bloodbowl. I don’t think it helps that he’s a similar pose to the blitzers either. And I don’t like the squig ball. I think it’s distracting. I don’t hate it. It just doesn’t seem like a cool… Read more »
Griff and Morg are simply stunning models
I used to own the metal sculpt of Varag Ghoul-Chewer and I actually think this new version looks more old fashioned! It’s the right arm in particular that bugs me. That blade arm just looks goofy. It just doesn’t look as well sculpted as the new plastics, which are fantastic. I’ve ordered it anyway and I hope it looks better when I see the real thing, but I may have to convert that right arm.
This does suffer in comparison to the mighty Zug. i don’t like their paint choices on this model, ( oh great painter that I am ….* cough) and I would have probably liked it better if the chin piece in the helm wasn’t there and we had more “orcy face” that being said I love the ball squig, and don’t really mind the pose. I will get him … but I can’t see him being a fave
A poor effort, not even as good as the blitzers in the box. As previously mentioned the zug figure was excellent but this isn’t. Also he is £18? The same price of a whole team? Rip off merchants peddling pretend ‘exclusive’ ‘limited edition’ nonsense behind a forge world moniker.
This is one weird looking figure. I like the standard blitzers better.
The old figure was great. What made it special was that it truly stood out in an orc team as a star player.
This one stands out for all the wrong reasons.
This is the third Vorag model now right?
