The Algoryns Come to Life for Beyond the Gates of Antares
July 16, 2014 by stvitusdancern
Check out the awesome work on some beautifully painted minis for the new game, Beyond the Gates of Antares.
It was the very talented painter, Jo Bain, that had a go at the Algoryns.
The Algoryns themselves are panhumans of distinctive appearance. They lack hair upon their heads, which are instead covered with crest-like keratinous growths. Similar nodules of keratin form a thick scaly layer upon their necks, shoulders and forearms. This dense protective layer shields the Algoryns against the harsh rays of the twin suns of Algorya, which periodically bathe the planet in dangerous levels of heat and radiation. Algoryn troopers are less lavishly equipped than the Concord’s shock troops or Isorian Shard phase troopers, but their weaponry is practical and effective, honed by years of war just like the Algoryns themselves.
Troopers are generally armed with mag guns, with only a few carrying heavier plasma based support weapons. Algoryn troops are protected by reflex shields mounted upon metallic plates: a useful general-purpose armour that is both sturdy and reliable. (Per Warlord Games)
Jo did a great job reading into the background of the faction and bringing the imagery to life. It's always cool to see how different people develop the characters from games from the stories provided, and it's even more exciting to see how the mini's come to life once paint is applied.
How do you think things look Beyond the Gates?

Bland to bad, to be honest.
I have read and seen nothing that makes me even remotely interested in the game.
Having gotten my hands on the alpha rules, I’m highly keen for the game and I do really like the sculpts for the Algoryns other then the weapon the guy on the far right is holding. It seems jarringly different aesthetic design compared to the rest of the models. For me, the worst part of this though is the paint scheme. It’s so bland. I feel like Jo read the fluff and decided that since they were “practical”, he just painted them matte grey and threw on some orange for contrast. He’s a good painter, but here I think he… Read more »
This is pretty much how I imagined them – they look like a professional fighting outfit. Really looking forward to the game!
I like these, but they are certainly not exciting or jaw dropping tbh. Sadly I would say the models look aged and about 10 to 15 years old already, with todays tools and processes, I would think this is being done on a limited budget. Price wise, I would think they are trying to achieve a Mantic style approach by creating cheap models and allowing more for your money. I would probably pkck some up, but it would be a curiosity purchase more than a MUST HAVE! Purchase tbh.
Forgot to add, the weapons look a little to cosplay for my liking too. Seems as though the weapons were an after thought. Paint job seems good though, not everything need vibrant colours like the old GW red years. Hehe
Some of the poses look odd as well. Good enough I suppose, for cheap sci-fi fodder.
Very nice – I like the more muted colour scheme that hasn’t gone down the eye-searing path favoured by some within the industry, and the poses, armour and weapon designs all appeal to me apart from perhaps the guy on the end with the X-launcher, which looks a bit awkward. Of course, since there is no formal Algoryn colour palette set up in the game lore yet, this is only one of the ways in which the unit could be painted, depending upon personal taste. For myself, I am waiting to get a look at the Concord models when they… Read more »
not amazing, but nice enough. dont think I would collect a whole force of them, but maybe half a dozen or so to mix up witht the various other alien type models I am picking up fpr the Rebs for warpath when it comes out
Something wasn’t clicking for me with these and it was only reading broadsides comment that I realised what it was. These are miniatures that would have looked good to me ten years ago.
I’m in agreement with most people here. They’re not bad but they’re very dated.
Don’t forget though guys, Warlord don’t have the development team or resources that GW have to “fine tune”. They’re a much smaller operation, and the success of Bolt Action caught them off guard (and they freely admit that)
Looking forward to seeing some more stuff at their open day next weekend
