A Painted Lichlord Battles A Necromancer In Frostgrave
June 16, 2015 by brennon
We've got another look at some of the painted miniatures from Frostgrave as North Star have not only shown off their painted Lichlord but also a warband led by a Necromancer and painted by Mark Wheatley. See what you think of them and something else Demonic below...
The Dead Rise
I like the way Frostgrave presents itself, with small warbands led by Spellcasters looking to eek out a fortune in the frozen city. It all has a very characterful feel to it and I think when this hits its going to be pretty big.
For example, above you can see the Necromancer warband in question where the soldiers following him have been painted in similar colours and they all look like they will unwavering serve him. Yet, with the same boxed set of plastics and a different Wizard you could have an entirely different looking warband ready to do battle.
The Lichlord also looks superb and you can already imagine him hidden away within some darkened crypt. The warbands then clash and crack open the crypt by mistaken unleashing this deadly evil and the undead that lay with him.
Demons!
Talking of deadly evil things there is also a new Demon shown off for the campaign...
This hunched 'Major Demon' looks like he'll take some putting down. I love the swirling magical tattoos and runic scars all over his body that are just begging to be painted as if an inner fire and magical energy is seeping out of his skin.
I reckon I'm sold on this game now!

Nice enough, but bad timing on the necromancer. The AoW one, imo, is far superior.
I’m hoping for big things with this game. So far it’s pushing all the right buttons for me and a couple of friends. I hope it doesn’t disappoint.
Frostgrave looks interesting and that’s for sure.
There are quite a few of us over here in NI that are getting interested in it..I think we have most of the figures we need already s just going for the rulebook
The necromancer is not bad at all, but I am not a fan of the demon… until I read it is a demon I thought it was a minotaur.
I like the mini but agree that it looks like a Minotaur. I don’t think that’s a problem ruleswise as it states that they have lots of different styles of demons.
I’m signed up for this and very excited. It’s been very well thought out, and so far, none of the usual issues Kickstarter’s often present. Though I’m not going for all the wizards, I am going for a few sets of the plastics. So far the plastic soldiers are the winner for me as they also look very versatile for other games which is a winner in my book. I have to agree with Vavasa’s comment re:the Greater Demon. Nice enough figure but doesn’t scream demon at me. He may end up as a Minotaur but I wait until the… Read more »
Forgot to add, I really like the Lich fig, but don’t need all those wizards (and not quite sold on all of them TBH) so opted for a lower level. That way I can choose what I want to add, and with any luck the Lich will be available separately in a short while anyway.
I can’t wait for this game to land on my doorstep. I’ve already started painting my first warband. They’re Wildling inspired…
I think the next one may well be headed up by this Necromancer.
Those are rather nice.
The Lich is coming out later, he’s part of the second supplement ‘Thaw of the Lich Lord’.
Yes, the demon is Minotaur-esque, we asked Giorgio Bassani the sculptor to do him that way, so guilty as charged.
