Osprey Raise the Flag for Fighting Sail & Black Ops
March 8, 2015 by dracs
Osprey Publishing have provided a list of all the Osprey Wargaming rules they will be releasing this year, letting players engage in battles ranging from the high seas to tactical espionage.
First up, we have Fighting Sail getting released in May. This book puts players in the position of fleet admirals between 1775 - 1815, reenacting the massive ship battles of the Napoleonic era.
Each fleet has access to different ships, tactics, and command personalities - each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Offering a unique blend of detail and simplicity, the scenarios included enable the recreation of historic actions or 'what-if' scenarios.
I love this period of naval history and this new rule set looks like the perfect way to explore it further.
After Fighting Sail, Osprey Wargaming takes a trip into the world of tactical espionage with the release of Black Ops in September.
So far, we don't have any details on this new game, but it looks like it will probably be a skirmish game blending modern warfare with some slight scifi elements, in the vein of video games like Call of Duty Black Ops. However it turns out, it should be an interesting new small scale wargame that I think will be heavily objective based to recreate black ops tactical missions.
Do you want to play Fighting Sail? Or would you prefer Black Ops?

I am absolutely going to be picking up a copy of Black Ops. Snake? Snake! Snaaaaaake!
Sam I am with you, when it comes to the Napoleonic ships, even it is a little late for me – the 17th century being the most interesting – I blame Sid Meier and Pirates!
Greatest. Video Game. Ever.
Fighting Sail could be interesting, but I shall wait to see what the more experienced naval wargamers on various forums have to say first before making a decision
I’ll probably get Fighting Sails, as I’m love naval games, but I’ve found the rules in the last few Ospray a bit week.
Black Ops has the potential to be very good, as I would think it will be very easy to use you existing collection in, whether it be 40k, Bolt Action, Deadzone etc.
Ooooo Black Ops , just aching for this , I have spectres new one , so seeing what else is coming.
this is why smaller skirmish games are out , lesser model count.
Will be interested in both sets rules. Currently playing Lion Rampant by Osprey. Really good fun medieval ruleset. You forgot to mention another they have got coming soon. Frostgrave:Fantasy wargames in the frozen city.

Well the Naval game sounds interesting, and it depends how well it is done there are a lot of rule sets out there. Many of the best however are not from big publishers who tend to over simplify things in order to sell product. That said there are some seriously complex systems out there that are a nightmare.
I backed the Afterlife Shards of Liberty KS. The Unity Council Spectre Operatives and the Republic Commando Assault Specialsts would be perfect for Black Ops if you were playing a sci fi/near future game. Amazon has a description of the game which says it will use a simple d6 system along with card activation. Players create teams from different character archetypes and can affiliate them with a specific faction if they wish. Plus there will be guides for running games in different settings such as WWII, Cold War or futuristic. That’s what I saw on Amazon, but Osprey haven’t put… Read more »
