Open-World Exploration Comes In Arkham Horror Expansions
July 4, 2022 by fcostin
Last October, we saw a brand new format to Arkham Horror from Fantasy Flight Games, kicking off with the Revised Core Set. Bringing a new starting point to adventures, this box had set the tone for a new Arkham Horror experience.
With players being provided with the chance to tailor their adventures depending on what expansion they choose per release. They can either jump into a gritty twisted campaign, or hire a wider team of skilled investigators. Bringing older content back, for new players to thrive.
Fantasy Flight have announced their next duo of expansions. No, we will not be headed back to an older set for a fresh revival into new format. We will have a new and improved open-world adventure, taking players all across the globe, in The Scarlet Keys.
The Scarlet Keys Expansions // Arkham Horror
The Scarlet Keys, alike previous releases for the new Arkham format will come out in two sets this Autumn. Placing players into the heart of discovery; missing people, missing buildings, missing objects, missing memories - but only a few remember.
"Before long, the mystery unravels into an international conspiracy, and our wary investigators find themselves recruited by a shadowy government agency whose sole purpose is the collection and research of paradimensional implements they call “Keys.” However, they aren’t the only ones searching for them…" - Fantasy Flight Games
Amina Zidane Cards Preview // The Scarlet Keys Investigator Expansion
The Investigator Expansion will contain one extra investigator than normal. With six new player cards in the pack, players will be introduced to Carson Sinclair - butler of the Webb family bringing incredible support and strength as a Guardian Investigator, Amina Zidane a doom-dwelling Mystic investigator harnessing potent magic, the game's second Neutral investigator Charlie Kane who flexes logic and politics with his peers and allies, and three more investigators to still be announced.
Game Map Preview // The Scarlet Keys Expansion
The Campaign Expansion for The Scarlet Keys is quite unique, bringing players to several locations scattered across the globe. In a non-linear expansion, each destination choice is down to the party. Each scenario in the game - bar the introduction and finale can be played in any order. This is wonderful in my opinion, I would love the idea of trying out a different trip each week into the unknown and on the hunt for the secret keys!
If you want to learn more about the new cards coming in either the Campaign Expansion or Investigator Expansion for The Scarlet Keys, be sure to check out the announcement post from Fantasy Flight Games here.

If you have been tempted by Arkham Horror LCG, the new release schedule has really been tweaked and refined for new players to get involved, like The Lord of the Rings LCG. Whether you want to put your agency first in the Investigators Pack, or jump straight into a more dark and gritty story in the Campaign Pack. It's great to see the ease of access across expansions, with more seasons being refined and released - Fantasy Flight have certainly made entering a lot easier for new players!
Secrets In Scarlet // Aconyte Books
Fantasy Flight Games did mention that if you wanted to gain a little bit more insight into The Scarlet Keys expansions, with a peer into the lore and upcoming characters and events, Aconyte Books will also be releasing Secrets in Scarlet which is directly tied to the mammoth release. If you would like your investigators a little more all-knowing than normal with a cheeky insight to context - be sure to check out the upcoming release from Aconyte too.
The new expansions are really opening up the world of Arkham Horror, bringing a large-scale campaign across the world, dealing with shady organisations and of course the power of the Mythos. Ready to be released in time for the spooky season, this Autumn.
Are you tempted by the new and upcoming expansions? Fancy some new adventure with the investigators you have, or want to meet the new recruits?
