Onyx Path Release Beast: The Primordial Back Into World of Darkness
April 1, 2016 by dracs
Onyx Path Publishing are once again allowing us back into the New World of Darkness as they tap into humanity's inner monster with the return of Beast: The Primordial onto DriveThruRPG.
In Beast, players take on the roles of the Begotten, beings who embody a primal nightmare of humanity, such as the fear of darkness, or of the depths. Their souls are those of ancient monsters, many of which have turned up in the myths of mankind. They must struggle in the New World of Darkness to sate their hunger, but must be careful not to overindulge, or else risk letting heroes rise to contest them.
Beast: The Primordial strikes me as a particularly interesting aspect of World of Darkness as its concept of the embodiment of mankind's nightmares is far more abstract than the other games in the series. Being part of the New World series, it is also tailored to fit with those other games, and its focus upon monsters and monstrous natures makes it the perfect way to further explore the setting.
Did you ever play Beast: The Primordial? Which of the New World of Darkness games is your favourite?

This sounds like it’s either such a stupid idea that no one would turn it into a game… Or like something that very, very interesting.
I really lost touch with the World of Darkness so I don’t know what’s going on now with New Worlds or rebooted old ones, but this makes me interested to investigate.
So, I believe, and could totally be wrong, that Onyx Publishing now is going forward with a unified One World of Darkness.. but we don’t have anything but presentations from conventions and a very simple web site to go off of … it appears they are still releasing old material, or updating some of it, for this “new edition” or at least for 2nd edition… there is something about Vampire the Requiem vs Vampire the Masquerade as far as who has rights to which and how they are going to change things to unify the One World of Darkness which… Read more »
If I understand their website they will have two systems :
(1) (classic) ‘World of Darkness’ : the old stuff which appears to be limited to Werewolf, Mage, Vampire, Wraith and Changeling
(2) the ‘new’ system called ‘Chronicles of Darkness’ which is everything else
We discussed all the changes a couple of months back on my podcast http://podcast.darker-days.org/e/darker-days-radio-episode-67/
(Classic) World of Darkness contains:
1. Vampire the Masquerade
2. Werewolf the Apocalypse
3. Mage the Ascension
4. Wraith the Oblivion
5. Changeling the Dreaming
6. Hunter the Reckoning
7. Demon the Fallen
8. Orpheus
9. Kindred of the East
10. Mummy the Resurrection
plus a couple of history settings
Chronicles of Darkness contains:
0. Chronicles of Darkness (the mortals)
1. Vampire the Requiem
2. Werewolf the Forsaken
3. Mage the Awakening
4. Promethean the Created
5. Changeling the Lost
6. Hunter the Vigil
7. Geist the Sin Eaters
8. Mummy the Curse
9. Beast the Primordial
10. Deviant the ? (2016/2017)
I had forgotten one line of the Chronicles of Darkness
11. Demon the Descent
White Wolf will be creating in house the One World of Darkness. Onyx Path have the rights to the 20th anniversary editions. By Night Studios have the rights to release the LARP content. Onyx Path will continue developing and publishing Chronicles of Darkness. So…. Vampire the Masquerade and all those old games were cancelled way back. A New World of Darkness was created with Requiem etc. Onyx Path was created as CCP/WWP were having problems etc. The MMO was then cancelled. Onyx Path did kickstarters for 20th anniversary editions of the old games. Old World of Darkness or Classic World… Read more »
I don’t want to sound too negative, because there may be something cool hidden inside. However … Is it me or does this entire “x : the x-ing” and “y : the y-thingy” sound a little too repititive these days ? And let’s forget the ever present idea that the players have to ‘struggle with their inner monster’ and a world which has hostile factions and yet another reason for a masquerade of sorts. Vampire did it. Werewolf did it. They’ve done it to ‘the created’ (aka golemns). We’ve had demons too (angels: the fallen I think? must have been… Read more »
@limburger I doubt they will do nine or so books for Beast. OPP only does lots of extra books for the core three lines; Vampire, Werewolf and Mage. Changeling the Lost proved so popular that they did more than 5 add on books, covering different aspects of the game. In essence, don’t expect a book for each monster type in Beast. That was the old White Wolf style when they had to keep the supplement treadmill turning. Having read all of the setting books for Chronicles of Darkness, and run most of them, I can say most of the games… Read more »
I guess I am confused… is this a re-print or an updated 2nd edition Chronicles of Darkness or Worlds of Darkness book? It looks like the same art from a 1st edition, but has a different authors name on the DriveThruRPG link…?
@ limburger… I suspect his is just a ‘re-release’ so not all new content hence the old naming convention and lack of inspiration for new material…
Beast the Primordial is a new line for the Chronicles of Darkness (before the name change, the New World of Darkness).
The book you mention is the Chronicles of Darkness (the 2nd edition of the New World of Darkness core book).
It’s been ages since I’ve seen any WhiteWolf stuff.
I’m equally confused. It is presented as ‘new’.
As such I wasn’t even aware that ‘Beasts’ had been done, but then given how they were milking the X:the X-ing theme when they were alive it doesn’t surprise me.
You can learn a lot more here about the changes for White Wolf and Onyx Path. http://podcast.darker-days.org/e/darker-days-radio-episode-67/
There is no Beast version for the Classic World of Darkness, it is a totally new line specifically for the Chronicles of Darkness / New World of Darkness.
See http://theonyxpath.com/ for more information.
The title of the article is very confusing. Saying ‘Onyx Path Release Beast: The Primordial Back Into World of Darkness’ will make it seem as if Beast was already a part of the World of Darkness. Which is not the case.
And in the article the mention ‘the return of Beast the primordial on Drivthrurpg’. This is not true, how can it return when it was never there in the first place? It’s a new addition.
It was because I have come across beasts in the past when researching for games of WoD and reading about the different imprints. The wiki entries for beast are admittedly sparse but it has been around. This is, as far as I’m aware, a reprint. I don’t believe Onyx are currently producing new additions to WoD, other than the anniversary additions for the classic series, although there are plans for some in the future.
Beast is a new game for NWoD, what is now “Chronicles of Darkness”. Thus is fits with Vampire the Requiem etc.
Onyx Path have the rights to release the 20th anniversary lines for the Classic World of Darkness, what is now just The World of Darkness.
White Wolf will be bringing out a new, 4th ed, One World of Darkness, for Masquerade etc.

@Dracs – Have you checked out the Onyx path website/kickstarters? There are a couple of new additions to the New World of Darkness made by Onyx Path: Mummy the Curse (2013), Demon the Descent (2014), Beast the Primordial (2016) and an announcement for Deviant the ? (2017)
New World of Darkness = Chronicles of Darkness
If you don’t believe me, there is an article by BoW Brennon: The Onyx Path Hits Kickstarter With Mummy: The Curse – See more at: http://www.beastsofwar.com/role-playing-games/mummy-curse-hits-kickstarter-onyx-path/#sthash.pq9iNcd9.dpuf
Even if there wasn’t the entire thing sounds like something WW would have done before.
Perhaps as a mini splatbook for Werewolf or something.
all I know is I have White Wolf books, and a New Mage 20th book that my buddy says is 2 inches thick(I drive a semi over the road) so I see some day when I get home…
Because everybody is confused here.
We talked about Beast, a new game for Chronicles of Darkness (what was New World of Darkness) back when the initial version was available for KS backers. http://podcast.darker-days.org/e/darker-days-radio-episode-64/
The book is now on general release as POD from Drivethrurpg.
We discussed the changes to Onyx Path and White Wolf;

Both the game, Beast, and the new White Wolf, are laden with some controversial issues and points.
Hope this all helps.
