Nuclear Shrimp Launching New Sci-Fi Wargame Black Earth Soon
January 23, 2017 by brennon
Nuclear Shrimp are going to launching their new 28mm scale wargame, Black Earth, soon via IndieGoGo and they've given us a quick peek at the world and the armies within it to get us started.
"In the earth of 2070 a race of mutated humans, known as the Homo Inhumanum, is wreaking havoc among the human population. The United Earth Federation, the largest political union on the planet, initiates Operation: Meteorite, a campaign to eradicate the brutes in an attempt to solidify itself as the protector and guardian of mankind.
Meanwhile, the Tecton Order, an elitist separatist faction within the UEF, is conspiring to see the operation fail and cause the federation to fall apart."
Three factions are therefore planned for you to get stuck into with two of them already fully painted up and looking rather neat!
The United Earth Federation seem to have some cool looking vehicles, some heavily armoured troops and a rather awesome Walker as you can see in the background. Conversely the Homo Inhumanum are a motley sort!
The game is said to have a new mechanic built in which will simulate real-time battling whilst also being fast paced and quick to get into. It will be cool to see how this manifests itself on the tabletop and the three factions should give folks a good choice when it comes to getting into the game.
You can go and find out more about the world over on the Black Earth Wiki which goes into more detail and will be updated over time. Which of the three factions has caught your eye?
Drop your thoughts below!

Hey there beasts of war! I’d like to thank you for writing for our upcoming game and tell you we’re super excited in anticipation of the Indiegogo campaign – just noticed you wrote kickstarter btw 🙂 – which will begin in February! In addition if there are any questions feel free to ask and we’ll answer asap.
Wow! Some fabulous stuff there… particularly the vehicles. Always refreshing to see an adult take on sci-fi, rather than gothic silliness.
“Always refreshing to see an adult take on sci-fi, rather than gothic silliness”
More trolling. Just can’t help yourself can you? Let’s set you a challenge. Let’s see if you can comment with insulting what other people enjoy in this hobby for a whole year. Bet you can’t do it.
Anyway I’ve come into comment on what looks to be a really cool, different sci-fi game with some really cool models, *without* feeling the need to back-handedly insult anyone else. I’ll post it below and you can use it as a guide for your challenge
Lol. “Let’s see if you can comment with*out* insulting”
I haven’t insulted anyone.
I’m with you, @cpauls1 – the infantry look a little too “40K bulky” and I’m not 100% about the walker (always with the exposed ammo / power feeds?) – unless that’s a suit or power armor or some such. But the vehicles look pretty good. And @vonevilstein, I don’t know what your problem is, but I suggest you knock it off. All he said was that he preferred on aesthetic to another. So challenge yourself to setting aside the keyboard justice, and you know what, set aside the condescending arrogance while you’re at it. The rest of us aren’t interested.
Agreed on the infantry @oriskany, and… well… the walker as well. I just got excited when I saw that six-wheeled FSV. 🙂 I’ll have me one of those when they become available… if the price is right. It’s competing with Secret Weapon’s fast attack buggy as an FSV for my ‘flying column’:

Nice vehicle, but the price is OTT.
@oriskany “but I suggest you knock it off”…..”So challenge yourself to setting aside the keyboard justice”. Well now, there’s irony. “The rest of us aren’t interested” Actually they are. cpauls1 has been warned by the moderators of this site before for crossing the line from critique into taking digs at GW and fans of GW (although he’s not alone in that). More popularly known as trolling. Because you agree with his viewpoint on this set of models does not mean that it’s perfectly fine to send a stronger message to those that do like these models. Comment on the models… Read more »
@oriskany I also just saw the exposed ammo feeds. Obviously those would be hardened in any realistic vehicle. Those are a pet peeve of mine, along with power feeds hanging from lasers. That’s what I meant by ‘adult’. Models like that don’t suspend disbelief, except for kids. Example: I was kitbashing the other day with a rail gun, and realistically, there would be a monster suite of capacitors, logically stretching out at the back of the turret. I thought of using Lego, and maybe connecting the Lego ‘connectors’ in series by wire, but had to weigh doing that against ‘describing’… Read more »
“That’s what I meant by ‘adult’. Models like that don’t suspend disbelief, except for kids”.
Fair enough, but again that really doesn’t come across well regardless of the intent – probably better just to leave the “kids” bit out. In any case is sci-fi always about suspending disbelief? I thought the idea of alot of sci-fi was much like fantasy…… escapism. Mind you I guess that’s just down to preference either way.
@vonevilstein Thanks, but I don’t need an editor; I have one. 😉
…just stroking himself – heavily!
*Shiver*
@cpauls1 @vonevilstein Take a breather chaps 🙂 No need to get riled up about any of the above, and have it escalate unnecessarily.
If someone thinks Gothic is silly, that’s fine, the line is crossed if they ‘personalise’ that. Didn’t happen here so as we say over here in Ireland, let it run off you like water of a ducks back 🙂
Apologies, @lloyd, I didn’t see you’d already replied to this. 🙁 I think we were posting at the same time.
He started it! ;-P.
I’m joking by the way, before we carried away with this. 🙂
Well maybe that’s not your intention and therein lies the problem. “Gothic Silliness” is obviously 40K and “adult take” implies that if you work for GW or play their games you’re pre-adult. Again that may not be intention but without tone or emotes that’s how it comes across.
I don’t think it’s going out on a limb though to say that GW’s marketing strategy and games have become increasingly focused on kids? I mean look at some of the rules for Sigmar, pretending to talk to a ghost or making goat noises. The bright blocks of colour and basic unit tropes, the straightforward rules etc.
Not saying there is anything wrong with this, and plenty of adults will enjoy it, but they do with lots of other things also aimed primarily at kids like Lego. Other people will not be attracted to it for the same reasons.
I like the mad max look. Of the humans…Gona make a Master blaster
Nice! Looks good, even for other gaming systems like rogue stars and this is not a test
some fantastic figures and the vehicles look great as well.
The mech and the power-armored troopers look fantastic. I’m not super keen on the other faction so hopefully the third faction is as good as the UEF.
Man that Mech and vehicle! I wonder if they’ll have a vehicle only option because I might not be able to resist!
Everything is going to be available as a single kit. There will be discount bundles ofcourse 😉
I’m interested!
Brotherhood of steel vs Supermutants what’s not to like 🙂
Exactly what I was thinking.
I was thinking 2nd edition 40k, although this time the dreadnought is on the side of the marinest! 🙂
Looks good though would be interested to see what the rules are like.
NOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooo……!!!
These look awesome. I am trying to keep away from kickstarters and this looks so good. 🙁
Loving the look of this! Particularly the United Earth stuff, they’ve got a nice hint of Aliens nostalgia whilst still being different. When this comes out in the shops I’ll be all over it ;).
very cool power armor models, i like how they did the walker too
@yannisred Steering this back to adult content: will the vehicles be offered separately on the kickstarter? I love the six-wheeled FSV, and also the four-wheeled vehicle in the last pic… not to mention the drones! 🙂
Yes! As Tsipis (the lead game/3d art designer) said in a comment further up, everything is going to be available as a single kit and of course there will be discount bundles for anyone interested! Btw we are mega hyped by the comments we received by you guys and are working even harder to bring the game to Indiegogo ASAP. <3
@yannisred Thank you! Also pumped by what you might offer. Good luck! 🙂
