North Star & Frostgrave Creator Talk New Game Oathmark
October 9, 2017 by dracs
North Star Military Figures have announced that they are working on a new game from the creators of Frostgrave. This time, they're delving into massed fantasy battles with Oathmark: Battles of the Lost Age.
This game sees players leading their armies to the conquest of a fantasy world, shattered and fallen from a once glorious past.
Here is the full announcement from North Star's Facebook:
"Empires have fallen, and the land is broken. The great oathmarks that once stood as testaments to the allegiances and might of nations have crumbled into ruin. Now is a time of warlords, tyrants, and petty-kings, who carve out their own realms and inscribe their oathmarks into standing stones, ancient trees, and the bones of their enemies. In this lost age, fealty and loyalty are as valuable as gold and as deadly as cold iron, and war is ever-present.
Created by Joseph A. McCullough, the designer of Frostgrave and Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago, Oathmark is a mass-battle fantasy wargame in which players command armies of dwarves, elves, goblins, and men, and campaign to expand their realms and secure the loyalty of those they conquer.
Oathmark allows players to field the fantasy army they have always wanted, whether a company of stalwart dwarves or a mixed force with proud elves and wild goblins standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the battle line.
With one miniature representing one warrior, Oathmark is a fast, bloody, and tactical game, and players can field warbands of 30 figures or armies numbering in the hundreds. An integrated campaign system allows players to develop their realms from battle to battle, adding new territories, recruiting new troop types, and growing to eclipse their rivals… or lose what they fought so hard to gain and fall as so many would-be emperors before them."
The Miniatures
All this sounds really promising, especially the part about fielding combined and single-nation armies. North Star has already shown off a couple of the miniatures they are preparing for the game.
While the game itself is still some way off, North Star have said that they will release the plastic minis as they are ready. This means that you could have your full force ready for when Oathmark sees release.
This looks like it could be a game with a very classic feel to it. I am interested to see how it will compare to other such games, and whether or not it will have any connections to Frostgrave.
What are your thoughts on this new fantasy game?

This is certainly interesting and i shall be following it closely .
(The old style Orc looks nice and spiffy too)
Those Dwarfgrave minis look amazing. Very interested in this one.
I like the sound of warbands of 30 minis. So, with boxes of 30minis you get a full warband in a single box.
This is one to watch.
I agree. And easily to expand both by another small band of a different kind as well as into a mixed force.
This is very interesting and i’ll check it out when it comes out. Although i should’nt since i still have a KOW army to finish assembling and play with!
I’ll probably buy the book at least
some great looking figures.
Love the orcs give me a real old school, LOTR animated film vibe
Oh man, those models looks great!
The dwarves I’m not entirely sure about. In general I indeed like rather classical looks for fantasy settings. Really depends on the individual case.
The goblin art is promising to me (but, you know, there’s a whole universe of ways illustrations can be close or different to minis and then there’s also the personal view on top of that.). The orc snippet does please me.
Or is this actually part of the goblin set? Maybe there’s no or just a gradual distinction in their world.
Interesting concept, but thirty figures doesn’t sound anywhere near massed combat to me…
From the article… “players can field warbands of 30 figures or armies numbering in the hundreds”
I think reading between the lines (I hope) it’s 30 figures per warband and you can have several warbands on each side
This looks interesting but I’m curious what will make this really stand out from the pack. Frostgrave was a success because it brought the necromunda/mordheim vibe at a time when the community was really looking for such a thing. The combination of making of your own terrain if you wanted, digging up old models and simple fun rules combined to make a game that scratched many an itch. Fantasy battles though, seems like a crowded market to me. I’m assuming though that what will make this stage out, is that you’ll be able to put together armies from all sorts… Read more »
Love the look of the minis…
