Norman Armies Gather In Gripping Beast Preview
September 20, 2019 by brennon
Gripping Beast has been previewing some new 28mm options coming your way as well as looking to the new scale of 10mm. Here we have a look at some early previews for their Norman Infantry which will be arriving as a plastic set in the near future.
This first set is a preview for their Unarmoured Infantry who will feature as one of the core elements of your force but they are also working on Armoured Infantry and the likes of Cavalry, Archers and Crossbowmen too. You'll note that these models are 3D printed but the final release will be in plastic so don't worry there!
As well as this look at the Normans for use in your Dark Age games the team also took the time to tell us that they are working on traditional sculpting for the Roman Cataphracts, Goth Comitatus and a range of Parthians too. A lot of this is coming from the esteemed Bob Naismith.
It seems like the future is bright for those who want to dive into Dark Age and Ancient wargaming.
Are you going to be picking these up when they release?

There are just too many other nicer Normans out there, plastic and metal, that unless these drastically improve, I just don’t think they will cut the mustard. Obviously this is early days and one pose but I didn’t get a mini-boner when I saw it. I do like GB plastics, think they offer a lot of value and are simple to put together – important if you want to do lots of Ranks and lots of Files! Really love their Arabs and Late Romans, so it is good to hear that Bob Naismith is going to be sculpting more for… Read more »
There’s “something” that a lot of sculptors just can’t get right with the over arm spear/jav posing. When sculptors move over to digital sculpting the poses always seem to get worse (as they are working with a 2D screen, rather than a 3D dolly). I think that’s the case here. One thing I did see with Core Space (which has some good posing) was that Colin actually “posed” for a lot of the mini’s while another took photos. Sometimes actually getting away from the screen/workbench and actually trying out a pose in RL (and what becomes comfortable/naturally) leads to some… Read more »
The proportions on this are a little off. There’s a lack of abdomen that seems to be making the whole body look collapsed.
Still, nothing that can’t be rectified. Also not a fan of the action man head. I’m seeing that a lot in digital sculpts.
I was talking on the GB facebook page and they said they still prefer sculpting in traditional way
These are pretty bad, so wooden and what’s going on with their necks?
Might be alright for a cheaper option but their sculpts look a bit off.
