New Ways To Get Started In Age Of Sigmar Coming With Magazine & More
July 2, 2018 by brennon
The folks at Games Workshop are going to be making it easier for you to get stuck into Age Of Sigmar with similar boxed sets to what we saw later on in the life cycle of 1st Edition. The first way to get stuck in is with a new magazine which introduces the game and hobby concepts to you...and it comes with a fancy Stormcast Eternal too!
This fellow is a unique Knight-Incantor that you can only get by buying this magazine. Inside the pages of the magazine, you'll find all you need to get started in the game with plenty of tips and tricks for both hobby and gameplay included.
If you just fancy poking your toe into the water this might not be a bad shout. With a free model to paint up, testing out a scheme and such, you might get bitten by the bug.
Storm Strike
The second way to delve into the new edition comes with Storm Strike. Storm Strike is a quick and easy way to get into the game with a handful of models (all push-fit), some accessories, a mat to play on, and more.
Because they know that learning a new game can be daunting they have also included a set of Battle Plans to get you through the basic mechanics of the game and additionally a full hobby guide which teaches you about painting up these models.
Tempest Of Souls
The next step up is Tempest Of Souls which adds more models into the mix from the larger Soul Wars box but has a cut-down selection of offerings for you.
As you can see it is a little bit of a step up but works as a good half-way house between you snapping up something as small as Storm Strike and the rather daunting Soul Wars. These will be available alongside a range of hobby products to get you started on the hobby side of things as well.
Old Warriors, New Box
The old Age Of Sigmar Starter Set is also getting a new lease of life as two new Start Collecting sets. First up we have the Goreblade Warband...
...and then the Thunderstrike Brotherhood. Each of these works as their own awesome force on the tabletop with rules for using them straight away in your games.
There are now plenty of ways to get stuck into Age Of Sigmar so watch this space and let us know which of the avenues into the game you'll be taking.
What has caught your eye?

That’s really cool. GW are doing a great job with AoS. I personally like the Stormcast. I really want that model with the magazine. Is the magazine a one shot or is it going to be a monthly?
I would imagine it is a one-shot product which will be out for a while (get reprinted etc) @zeker1966
The ratio of Grimghast Reapers and Glaivewraith stalkers leave me a bit confused. Adding Tempest of Souls to Soul wars rounds out most of the units for matched play minimum required unit sizes. But you are left with two additional graivewraiths you can’t feild (min unit 4, 5 in each box) but more baffling, you’ve now got eight (four from each box) of the Grimghast Reapers which a minimum unit 10. I know they always do this lol, like three Retributors in the box, minimum unit of 5, so you buy the easy build set of 2 to make it… Read more »
That confuses me too; my guess is it was originally supposed to be that way during production but at some point the unit sizes were switched for whatever reason, but it was too late to alter the sprues as those had already been finalised and the molds made.
My plan when I get Soul Wars will be to use the four Reapers from there to kitbash Chainghasts and just buy a box of Reapers to get a mini unit of them.
Soul War (and these sets, too, I’d imagine) comes with matched play points values for lower unit minimums. 4 for Glaivewraiths, 3 for Evocators, etc.
Yeah but they don’t work with those in the GH2018. Must have been printed before some changes were made. Either way you’d want the minimum unit size and your still 2 short.
As I´m planning a special Stormcast Stormhost based on the Bull-Hearts after the Battle with Nagash, I´m happy to see more Stormcast possibilities. It is nothing new, but more flexible ways to get some of them.
Storm Strike looks like a good set; going by the comments the Warhammer Community article made its priced at £25, which is s great saving considering buying the minis separately would cost you £40. 🙂
Glad to see GW were smart enough to bring the original AoS Starter Set Models – let’s hope we see the Island of Blood (High Elves and Skaven) set again (Spire of Dawn).
That Knight-Incantor is an embarrassment and looks like a toy.
It IS a toy…
Well GW do not generally produce toys. Some children can play their games, sure, just as a kid can play Chess, but they have always been pieces of art and games for adults.
It’s nice to see those smaller sized starter boxes as well as new Getting Started magazine. Maybe now I don’t need to search for some to split Soul Wars with because I really want those undead. Sure I will still sell Sigmarines but still because I don’t want those to my home.
May get the first one for a noisy and the figure.
I need to add to my new Stormcast army so literally ALL of these would find a welcome home here. Nice to already have an alternate model for the support caster. I feared some kit bashing was required.
Oh gosh darn it, that Storm Strike box has all four of the ETB boxes that were just released, and if it is priced similarly to the old Storm of Sigmar box, it will be more or less what I just paid for two of those ETB boxes. Dangit!
It’s pretty much similar to First Strike boxed set on 40k side while Tempest of Souls is pretty much like Know No Fear boxed set.
This more or less matches what they did for 40k 8th edition, which also had ‘cheaper’ variants of the complete starterset.
I wonder if they’re going to do this to any other product of theirs.
What has caught my eye? All the things!
