The Mortans Of Godslayer Get Their Mighty Avatar
March 6, 2018 by brennon
The Mortans of Megalith's Godslayer are next up to receive their mighty Avatar which will cause havoc on the battlefield. Here are the first looks at the renders for the Domina Mortis.
The Mortans in Godslayer are styled after the Romans of our world and have a fascination with death and the undead, hence the rather unhealthy look to the Domina Mortis here.
I like the overall theme of the miniature with the focus twisted towards a skeletal deity dressed in her rotting clothes and wearing what I would assume is a glittering death mask. It would be neat, when painting the model, to have the model looking like it had just come out from the grave, but keep that death mask pristine.
The one thing I don't like about the model is the rather dinky axe head she has on that weapon clutched in her right hand. While I'm sure it looks like that for a reason, it would have been neat to see it maybe double the size just to give it more weight and significance. At present, it looks tacked on as an afterthought.
What do you think?

I was expecting something, hm better looking. I’m kinda dissapointed by this avatars look. I liked the Halodyne and Nordgaard Avatar much better than this one..
Very creepy. Nice detail!
The “axe” is a fasces, the Roman symbol of legal power.
We don’t want the axe-head to be comic-style big, otherwise it spoils the fasces symbol, and just looks like a dumb axe, but I suppose we could make it 10-20% larger.
Thanks for the suggestion.
it’s also where the word Fascist comes from
It took me a moment to realize it was a fasces (before reading your comment) but I only thought to consider it after remembering that she is supposed to be Roman-influenced. Fasces have always looked odd to me when they have the axe-head positioned so far from the end. I’m not sure that making the head larger would entirely fix that. Perhaps the casual observer would simply remark “Hmph, somebody doesn’t know how to make an axe.” Maybe emphasizing the staves/rods bundled around the axe and moving the axe head “forward” of the rod bundle would help it “read clearly”.… Read more »
Think the fascis origin is very clear. But you’ve got to know it.
Difficulty is, you don’t see a bundle of sticks as the large strips of colth conceal that. Rather looks like a log or a scroll case this way. I understand this is coming from the popular sylised depictions. Still recommend doing it a bit different in order to show the rods.
Interesting… I really like the standard
Ooh a fantastic looking figure of a great (necromancer?).
Found the CinC for my undead Roman Legion! I love the fasces as is. Plus the standard is a nice play on the Roman eagle. More undead Mortans!
