Stand Between The Mortal & Magic Realms In Liminal RPG
June 13, 2019 by brennon
Modiphius has taken on another roleplaying game this week as they look to a bit of urban fantasy with Liminal. This game sees you playing characters caught between the Mortal and Magic realms, dealing with the situations that arise from having awareness of the supernatural.
Here's the rundown from the game creators...
"Liminal is a self-contained tabletop roleplaying game about those on the boundary between the modern day United Kingdom and the Hidden World - the world of secret societies of magicians, a police division investigating Fortean crimes, fae courts, werewolf gangs, and haunted places where the walls between worlds are thin."
The first thing that caught my eye from this is the focus on the United Kingdom and Britain here. It's all too often we see games like this set in America so it's great we're looking at this from a European standpoint instead.
As well as having a history and landscape which is steeped in folklore and mysticism it's also going to be fun getting stuck into a game where guns are a rarity! Here are some of the different characters you can play as in Liminal...
- A magician who acts as a warden to protect unaware mortals from supernatural menaces;
- Someone of mysterious birth who is perhaps half Fae. In any case, they are caught up in Faerie politics whether they like it or not;
- A burglar who steals supernatural relics;
- A werewolf who still has many ties to ordinary people;
- A dhampir, striving to do good despite their vampiric infection;
- A mortal detective who knows some of the real strangeness out there
I am immediately thinking a lot about books like Dresden Files and some of the interesting conundrums that are brought to life in those stories by Jim Butcher. However, I think that the awesome roleplaying hook here is going to be trying to deal with your character's dual nationality and what interesting situations this forces you into.
Adventure Hooks
As well as the main book above which is available in PDF form right now (the physical version is sold out at the time of writing) there's also two sets of Case Notes for busy Games Masters to use. The first is Prodigal Son.
"In this case note for the Liminal RPG, the crew are taken on by a prominent magician in the Council of Merlin to track down his missing son. Naturally, things are more complicated than they seem. There is the question as to why someone in the arrogant Council of Merlin needs people involved who do not belong to the organisation. It turns out that getting involved with werewolves is the easy part of the case."
And, if you don't fancy looking to werewolves there's also Haunting House which has you dealing with ghosts!
"The crew investigate the ghostly legacy of a deceased magician. A legacy involving forbidden magic and dangerous ghosts. This case note can be run as a sequel to Prodigal Son, or independently."
All of this sounds pretty awesome to me already. I am very tempted to crack out the download for the Liminal Quickstarter PDF so I can try this out. Something tells me that Sam is also going to absolutely love this [Sam's Note: Yes, I do!].
"Will you be giving this a try and if so what kind of character would you play?"

yes. yes. all the yes. I need this in my life. It’s like Rivers of London, with added adventure elements.
… this finally gives me the system I need to run a story I’ve been thinking of for some time, mixing police procedural, haunted houses, magical contraband, and the fay ambassador to London.
indeed a neverwhere/rivers of london/even bit of mieville can get an rpg airing now!
The London and Newcastle sourcebooks are written by someone from my gaming group. Recommended.
