Middle-earth Dice & More Coming Soon From Games Workshop
August 10, 2018 by brennon
Games Workshop has shown off some of the ace accessories which will be arriving alongside the new Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game releases in the near future. First off we have three different dice sets!
The first set features the design from the inside of The One Ring. All of the dice feature pips and the above image on the side which would normally show a six. It's better to have the nice side on a dice face that makes people happy.
To match with the new Boxed Set for the game you can also snag a set of dice which feature a horse from Rohan...
...and the evil Eye Of Sauron for those who prefer to fight for the forces of Evil.
The dice are looking very nice indeed and since I am collecting Rohan at the moment I might be tempted to delve into these accessories and the Boxed Set of course.
If you want to be really snazzy however there's also a set of Measuring Sticks which are shaped after iconic weapons from The Lord Of The Rings.
Each of them is actually suited to the movement and ranges from the game. For example, Sting is perfect for Hobbit movement, Gimli's axe is perfect for Dwarves and Gandalf's Staff is the right measurement for spellcasting!
You also have a very nice Gondorian symbol which can be used as the marker for First Player if you wish. I think it would be fun to paint up all of these to look like the pieces from the movies.
What do you think of these new accessories?

Interesting but I am worried of cost considering that those seem to have only 4 dice.
Says 8 on pack
8 Dice is written on the boxes. The range measurement pieces look like a nice gimmick. Looking forward to the new rulebook and upcoming miniatures though. Maybe the system will have a resurrection, when the new middle earth series will come and Games Workshop will support it longer than 2020. It is indeed one of the best skirmish systems in my opinion.
What makes it such a good skirmish system?
@captainventanus for me it is probably one of the better narrative skirmish systems – it works really well with asymmetric forces (a few heroes v a swarm of bad guys). It has a very simple set of core mechanics, but great depth through it heroic actions rules, and rewards positional play. One of the games that really show the difference between simple elegant design and simplistic rules writing. I am personally less of a fan of point match games, and think it starts to have difficulties once the numbers get too high. Difficulties is probably not fair, but I think… Read more »
I think its the only GW game that I feel like I missed out on. I know its coming back but I would want to see how well its supported before I bought in on it.
It never went away. They stopped releasing any new stuff for the last couple of years and then new stuff started coming out slowly from Forge World. But its been on sale continuouslyp since 2001.
I know but its popularity has dropped considerably since RoTK. I haven’t seen a game played for years.
Thanks for this, appreciate it. I’ve always found it hard to come by useful reviews of the system. Heard it was good, but never could find a good breakdown of what it actually involves.
You are welcome plenty of great resources online with better details.
Hi Captainventanus, sry for the late reply…i liked the pure system of the lotr sbg very much because it had a few things i feel that are neccessary for a fun skirmish game. Aside from the Tolkien setting and the good vs. evil theme. – First it is easy to learn (I played it with my wife, who isn’t into miniatures gaming at all), but can be very tactical if you use enough and variants of terrain. – It felt very balanced and not too luck dependend. – It is a very quick ruleset when the numbers don’t go too… Read more »
No worries. The easy to learn but is very encouraging for precisely the same reason!
On the shopping list.
They look good the weapon markers is a great idea for the game.
Hope Lotr gets reinvigorated, this is a good step towards it!
The dice are pretty, particularly the Rohan and one ring dice. Think I prefer my old Mordor dice.
Measuring sticks, not feeling it. Although I would be all over some nice acrylics and a token set.
Hello my name is Beardragon14, and I am a dice-a-holic. it has been three weeks since I bought my last dice, ….and … AND THESE THINGS ARE GOING TO PUSH ME OVER THE EDGE!!!!! …..*sigh* so beautiful. In the last 8 months I have added Hobbit/LotR SBG (thank Alule … I can now just call it MESBG now..) back in my gaming rotation again and, as many of the wise men above me have said, it is a tonne of fun. I do like the novelty of the measuring sticks, I may just get them and paint them up so… Read more »
Stay strong brother….. about to fit a few games here, regular opponent and myself are in a bit of a lull at present and not sure what’s next lotr could be it (mesbg sounds like some annoying insect). I am waiting on more details as to scenario books as that is my preferred play style.
Yeah @dags. I loved the old Journey books and we played a lot of them over the early part of the 21st Millenium. At the moment we are either doing battle companies (and there is a really nice narrative campaign in there that we are going to give a go) and 2 scenarios from the most recent Hobbit book that we have all the models for and are a lot of fun.
The lack of troops at a reasonable price has put me off the hobbit as to play the scenarios through you are looking at a multi-thousand pound investment. I have everything to play the originals, but never got the journey books. They came out while I was on my teacher training.
Im so gonna get the evil dice for my Harad and Umbar 😀
I must have it all!
