Return To Middle-earth With Battle Of Pelennor Fields This Weekend!
August 20, 2018 by brennon
Games Workshop is going to be making plenty of us Hobbits very happy this coming weekend with the new Battle Of Pelennor Fields Boxed Set for the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game which introduces not only two mighty armies but the revamped rules too.
The new set contains forces of both Good & Evil. Rohan rides to the aid of Gondor as Minas Tirith is besieged on all sides by the Witch King of Angmar. King Theoden leads the charge with a new miniature.
He is supported by Warriors and Riders Of Rohan who are crying Forth Eorlingas and smashing into the myriad ranks of Morannon Orc who have been called up by The Dark Lord to do his bidding.
Summoned by Aragorn as he walked The Paths Of The Dead, the Good people of Middle-earth are also able to call upon the aid of the Warriors Of The Dead.
The task of the Men of Rohan and their allies, however, is not an easy one as they are facing the mightiest of Sauron's champions in the shape of the Witch King Of Angmar, mounted atop his Fellbeast.
He not only has a host of Orcs at his command but also Trolls too who are just as adept at crushing skulls as they are at breaking down gates and harrying those inside The White City.
All of the kits in here, with the exception of King Theoden, are from the existing plastic range so many Middle-earth fans are going to be familiar with the offerings presented to them.
That's not to say that I'm not grateful to Games Workshop for putting a lot more faith in this product. It's great to see Middle-earth going from strength to strength on the tabletop and seeing a resurgence backed by a great community.
New Rules
As well as the new boxed set you will also see two new books from Games Workshop. The first of these is the new Rules Manual which collates everything together into one place and contains all of the updated rules you need to play games set in the period of The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit.
This book will contain an array of scenarios and profiles for the miniatures within the boxed game pictured above but if you want to play with heroes and villains from further afield you'll need the Middle-earth Armies Of Lord Of The Rings book.
In here you will find the points values and statistics for the creatures, characters and soldiers of The Lord of the Rings. It's quite important to be aware that profiles for The Hobbit characters probably won't be included in here so bear that in mind.
I can't wait to check this game out in more detail and see what has changed as we look towards a new era for this splendid tabletop game.
Will you be pre-ordering?

Well this looks like an expensive weekend. Over the last 9 months I have started playing this game again, and it is such a beautiful system.
I don’t have the Witch King of Felbeast model, nor the warriors of the dead, and only 12 Moranin Orcs… so it is a good excuse to get the new rules and new Theoden models….. *contented sigh*
I do like what they give in this boxed set. So much so that I am thinking maybe finally starting Middle-Earth game.
Give it a go mate , it’s a simple system ..yet once you get into it you can do all sorts of tricky tactics.
*happy excited squeeing*
Don’t get too excited… there are no hobbits riding with Dernhelm in that set, so you can’t imagine yourself riding into battle 🙂
Their is hobbits in the pelennor field with the Rohan wounding the witch king so people can add some.
Is you’re inner hobbit coming out @dracs
I have the miniatures for Merry and Pippin in their Pelennor Field armour. There damn well will be hobbits there!
Assuming the price point is reasonable and it’s available to independent retailers properly, I could see myself jumping back into this ruleset.
It’s what got me started with wargaming back in the day, so I still have some nostalgia for it.
Great model’s love the trolls may be getting some for stomping Questers, are olifants coming out For this dance ?
Already out: https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-US/Mumak-Warherd-2018
Expensive but a nice set of beast’s.
I want to get this, but GW is basically bombarding us with excellent new releases right now. Between Kill Team, Titanicus and Tooth and Claw I just can’t fit much else into my hobby schedule.
Maybe I’ll have my wife put it onto my X-mas List. I should be able to clear some of the backlog by then.
As exited as I am about this, (and it will be pre-ordered this weekend) will the existing range of models be available through local flgs?
This makes it seem as though the boxed set will contain the rulebook but not the army book. That’s a little frustrating.
Cant come soon enough… counting down the minutes!!
I’m not overly impressed with the models.
that was unexpected
having missed the boat first time round I’m hoping to get a trip to Warhammer World near my birthday, should hopefully get a few test games in before heading home with one of these bad-boys
I will pick up the new rules, and I am tempted by the box although I don’t need a lot from it, but at the moment hobby budget being saved for other things. I am keen to see how narrative support unfolds for this edition.
Once I have current stuff sorted i will get on board.
It is a great starter though and fantastic value
