Middle-earth: War Of The Rohirrim Pre-Orders This Weekend
November 25, 2024 by brennon
Games Workshop will be taking pre-orders for the new edition of Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game this weekend. You'll be able to get your hands on the new Starter Set, the new Rulebooks and more for battling during the War Of The Rohirirm, The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings.
Battle Of Edoras // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
At the heart of the new edition is a brand-new Starter Set for the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game. Much like Battle Of Osgiliath, this set comes with the full Rules Manual for the game and a supplement containing the profiles, rules, and scenarios for playing games with both the Hill Tribesmen and the Warriors Of Rohan.
All but the Rohan Houses are brand new plastic kits for Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game, sculpted to match the characters from the new animated movie but also the miniatures range as it stands. On one side, you have Haleth and Hama leading the men and women of Rohan.

Battling against the two sons of Helm, you also have Wulf & General Targg and their Hill Tribesmen. All are warring to secure the throne of Rohan in their own way, leading to the tragedy of the War Of The Rohirrim and the story of Helm Hammerhand combined with the myth that springs from his wintery wanderings.

As noted above, all of the miniatures in the new Starter Set are brand-new plastic kits. The Rohan Warriors set is a great nod to the old plastic set but with new sculpts showing off how far things have come since those early days of The Two Towers.
Rohan Warriors // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
The Hill Tribesmen present in the Starter Set are also a new plastic kit which replaces the old metal Men Of Dunland. You can use these for your Dunlending forces during the period of the War Of The Ring as well as during the War Of The Rohirrim. They also look excellent and see like they'd be a perfect painting project for slapchop!
Hill Tribesmen // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
These two plastic sets of Warriors will be available to buy separately from the Starter Set. This means that if you're going to be picking up the new edition but don't care for the Starter Set, you can get your hands on the new miniatures for your armies.
Brand New Rules
As well as the new plastic sets, you are also able to buy the new rules for Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game.
New Rules Manual // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
This is a new 176-page set of rules which cover all of the core rules as well as advanced rules for playing out different scenarios. You'll find information on how to build armies for Matched Play as well as lots of Narrative Play primers for those who want to dive into telling the story of War Of The Rohirrim or The Lord Of The Rings. This book AND the others that you see below are all available physically but also in eBook format.
The two Armies Of... books cover the different heroes, troops, monsters and more that would have been fighting during the period of The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit.
Armies Of... Books // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
There are twenty-seven Good army lists and nineteen Evil army lists for The Lord Of The Rings. The Hobbit book features fifteen Good army lists and seven Evil army Lists. Whilst you will need the above Rules Manual to use these, you can pick and choose which book you snap up based on the period you often play in. I have gone a long time just using Armies Of The Lord Of The Rings for the current edition of the game.
More War Of The Rohirrim Miniatures
A lot of the previously previewed War Of The Rohirrim miniatures are also going to be available separately this weekend. You'll be able to get characters for both Rohan and the Usurpers.
Helm Hammerhand, Wraith Of The Hornburg // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
Freca, Lord Of The West-March // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
Lord Thorne Of The Wold // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
All three of these characters are Forge World Resin releases and will be out alongside the core Starter Set for War Of The Rohirrim. I can see a lot of folks picking these up, especially after they have watched the movie. I will most likely try and get through all of the miniatures in the Starter Set first then look at picking up these characters.
Now painted and rethemed to represent the Great Eagles Of The Misty Mountains from War Of The Rohirrim, this plastic set is also returning to the webstore.
Great Eagles Of The Misty Mountains // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
You can get your hands on these and use them as the Great Eagles but also the Fledgling Great Eagles if you're diving into the time period of War Of The Rohirrim.
Angmar Released Sighted!
Some of the lost Angmar releases haven't been forgotten and are coming out alongside the pre-orders for War Of The Rohirrim. Buhrdur, Hill Troll Chieftain is back with a brand new Forge World resin miniatures for use alongside your Angmar forces.
Buhrdur, Hill Troll Chieftain // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
He can lead a Troll-based warband if you see fit to do so and thankfully, the regular Hill Trolls Of Angmar are also going to be available for you to pick up in Forge World Resin.
Hill Trolls Of Angmar // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
Rules for these new miniatures will be included as part of a free PDF for the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game so it covers the new edition and the changes to the rules. I get the sense that these miniatures should have been out a long time ago alongside the release of the Angmar supplement.
Back To Osgiliath?
Finally, you are also able to get a big set of Osgiliath terrain for those wanting to build the crumbling city from the War Of The Ring.
Osgiliath, Ruined City Of Gondor // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
This set really is a proper bit of miniature wargaming Lego. You can make a lot of different pieces of terrain using this collection rather than just the buildings that you see here. I really enjoyed building the Ruins from the previous Starter Set although painting them white took quite a bit of effort!
Are you going to be picking up some of these new releases and returning miniatures for Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game?

Looks ok.
It’s not a bad looking set, but I still haven’t finished painting the last two boxes and if I buy the new rules I can’t use my Armies of LotR and Quest of the Ring Bearer books are useless.
That is a pretty cool looking set and I do find myself tempted even though I’ve never been interested in the MESBG game.
Makes me wish they had done something like this with WFB rather than the hotch-potch AoS thing. Really I think the WFB plastics should have been single piece like these…though with more than just the mono poses of the past.
