The Lord-Aquilor Leads The Charge For Age Of Sigmar’s Stormcast

We saw the Vanguard Hunters earlier in the week for Games Workshop's Age of Sigmar and now we get to see how the Gryph-Chargers are turning out as the Lord-Aquilor mounts up on one to take the fight to the enemy.
The Lord-Aquilor leads the forces of the Vanguard Chamber as they ride out into battle. Still adorned in the slightly lighter plate armour we saw on the Hunters he is decidedly more ornate. One assumes we're going to see some more regular Gryph-Charger riders too in the near future.
I like the design they're going for here again where they've taken the Demigryph/Gryph-Hound look and amplified it with an extra dose of the magical. I think I prefer these to the Dracoths that we saw in the Extremis Chamber.

I do like that mount but rider not so much. I have seen trend that Sigmarine mounts are better than they riders.
As much as I love the mini, I wish they would give some of the other factions a bit of love.
As I said to dags maybe they are doing small releases to keep them in the public eye, but yeah there are a lot of people who need to be done I want to see how they revamp the elves. I mean with the way they were done in Silver Tower was any thing to go by they looked to be very exciting.
GW must be convinced stormcast are a hit as there are still massive sections of the game awaiting update, but they continue with these.
Personally they are worse looking, less interesting marine-a-likes. Plus side it’s the first sigmarite beast that doesn’t look like the apprentice was left alone on the CAD program and is a decent fantasy beasty.
I think there sales numbers must be telling them that, either that or the plan is to always keep the stormcast in the eye by having continual small releases among the bigger releases like the Tzeentch one
There’s a fairly long lead time for GW minis releases so I doubt we’re seeing so much for the Stormcast because they’re selling well (which they may or not be). I think it’s more likely that GW are trying to establish them as the flagship line or AoS.
I’ve been watching their twitch channel and they interviewed one of the heavy metal painters the other week. They are painting stuff two years in advance. He also said that they get 2-3 days to paint up a normal size mini. was a really good interview.
They also talked about how over whelming it is when you first go into the studio as you suddenly get to see the next 2 years off GW releases and it takes a while to sink in
The last time I was at Games Day (which I think was 2009) they had the whole design process laid with members of each team on hand to talk to. IIRC the whole process for creating a new army book or codex took five years from the very first concepts to hitting the stores.
I don’t think the Stormcast have taken that long, not least because I don’t think AoS itself had five years lead time, but I reckon that pretty much everything we’ve seen so far was in the works by the time AoS was launched.
Haven’t been a fan of the previous Stormcast mounts and monsters, but I quite like this one.
I really like the Gryph Hounds from the Stormcast range, and I think this beastie works, if anything, even better. It has a strong fantasy motif that fits with the existing imagery of the Stormcast range, it looks large and strong enough to bear its armoured rider without difficulty, while simultaneously being lithe and fast looking to a degree that makes it credible as a fast cavalry/forward element option. This is a nice miniature. I think the crossbow (in this miniature and the other ones) would look better if the cross pieces were horizontal and not vertical. I know it is a small change but it would be more appealing to me.
I think the hunter and the griff-charger riders (light cavalry to the dracolith heavy cavalry) are part of a Vangard Chamber one of the Chambers in the stormcasts book that wasn’t explored. That being said I assume that the first model is the Lord Celistant of said chamber, on some sort of griff-super-charger (maybe it’s a V8….. maybe his name is Max …. 😉 ). I quite like him

I like the demi-gryph but will pass due to the rider. I may pick up the beastie by itself from an Ebay bits merchant, and put a better knight on it. Depends on the price.
Actually I hope that they do model the kit in such a way that people (far more capable than myself) can put different riders on it easily (Ie rider’s legs aren’t attached to mount’s sides). It is a lovely mount and would be a modders delight
I’m thinking of using it as a mount for my Battlesystem demi-gryph command group. If I can find a demi-gryph rider online, I’ll have myself an army commander. Depends on price, of course.
Upon closer inspection, there’s something wrong with that breast plate. It just doesn’t sit right. Also, the hanging bits are hanging at an angle, as if the whole front end was angled after the sculpt was finished. I know it’s a minor thing to fix something like that, or just cut them off, but for what they’re bound to charge for this, we shouldn’t have to. Pass.
This is one of the first Stormcast models that I truly like. I may pick this up for the beast.

I’ve kinda changed my mind on these. The stiff poses make them good for animated statues, but they’re just too ‘thick.’
In one photo you can see the difference between good CAD design and bad CAD design, those squared blocky muscles just need a few passes with a rounding tool and they would be fine. Indeed you can see this on some of the minis. Really makes me wonder if these are really you have x hours then we are done.
Someone needs to convert this guy to a chocobo rider!

I like the elegant look of the gryph. Would be nice if they release more elves that they get them to.
Mount is nice, reminds me of the book wyrm from Dark Sword Miniatures. Stormcrap on the other hand is as bland as ever. They should just stop releasing them and focus on other armies (usable in The 9th Age preferably :D).
After some embarrassing previous models this is much better – more dark, more vile, better model – better look. Fair enough GW, fair enough.

I’m going to start looking at pics of exotic birds to get some inspiration for the colour scheme. I love the model but the colour scheme on the bird doesn’t do it justice in my opinion.
