Knight Models No Longer Creating Marvel Universe Miniatures
February 9, 2017 by brennon
The announcement today came through that Knight Models will no longer be making/selling miniatures for their Marvel Universe Game. Indeed, the whole section has gone from their website.
This is a real shame as the Marvel side of things was probably drawing in a fair amount of support due to the powerhouse that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Still, there was a wonderful selection of miniatures on offer and the game wasn't half bad either by all accounts!
They are still continuing to work with Warner Bros however on creating not only the Batman Miniatures Game and DC Universe Game but also the Harry Potter Miniatures Game too. Mark A. Latham, a writer and game designer is cracking on with the rules for that second project.
So while we're not going to see more from Marvel over the coming months via Knight Models at least if you're a fan of Wizards or Batman you're going to be a happy bunny.
What do you think of the news?

It always felt like the Marvel side was 2nd fiddle vs. the DC support for the Batman game. Perhaps the licence for the Marvel stuff was costing them too much given the return and interest in the Marvel side. Maybe some other company will get the licence for Marvel miniatures going forward. I know Wizkids has the licence for Heroclix already and do alot of Marvel stuff. -Speaking of Heroclix, it seems like it doesn’t get much play or attention here on BoW and I know it’s not really stocked and sold at all in the stores here in Dublin.… Read more »
Yeah, it did seem a bit strange that the MUMG didn’t warrant it’s own hard back book. I suspect the cost involved wasn’t worth it giving how ‘little’ KM were making after paying Marvel their cut (as it were). It is a shame they have already removed the Marvel stuff from the site though since it would have been nice to get hold of the cards for the models I don’t have.
Supposedly they can be obtained from the KM Marvel facebook group but you might have to be quick! 🙂
All cards from KM games can be found here:

Great, thanks!
There is something of a Clix scene on this side of the Irish Sea, though its demographic doesn’t crossover much with miniature wargamers and tends to skew a little younger too.
I think this is a Disney decision and the management has been making a lot of changes in all of their divisions. They came up short on the stock market expectations (mostly due to the huge losses at ESPN) and they knew this was going to happen so changes are being made. They have goals and if not being made they will continue to make what looks like drastic changes.
As to Heroclix and also Dice Masters I think Wizkids will keep going as the projects keep moving forward.
I think the Gathering might sell some stock of it but it could be old. I think in Ireland at least it was a bit of a flash in the pan.
Replay games in Bangor used to have a lot of Heroclix in stock. Not sure about now though
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Say it ain’t so!
I was really looking forward to painting more Marvel minis. This is a sad day. I hope one day they get it back as I was looking forward to playing Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy along side the Justice League and Teen Titans, and against on another. Oh well, at least they have DC stuff coming out more and more.
Not surprised , but Disappointed in that I can’t imagine anyone making another one like it.
Heroclix has taken a big hit in the US, the store I play in used to have huge tournaments where players would buy a full brick (10 boosters) just to find an exclusive figure. Nowadays the store is selling them with a discount to get rid of them. Wizkids put out so many sets with varying quality in sculpts and ability that most players have left the game. I have been breaking the better ones of their bases to us as NPCs in other games or RPGs.
I have a huge crate of heroclix I used for Champions tabletop RPG. The early releases were best because they had lots of thugs, cops, and generic sorts mixed in which is exactly what you need for RPGs. The later (and current) sets are mostly reposes of existing heroes and villains. You can only use so many Batmen in a tabletop RPG before it gets silly!
Whilst it’s been increasingly likely that this was coming, it became painfully obvious a couple of days ago when KM tried to claim some of the Marvel minis were no longer on sale because the moulds had worn out. Then word started leaking out that retailers had been told it was ending. The release makes it seem like it was KM’s decision, and given how long they’ve held the license it seems most likely to me that the cost of renewing it will be the culprit. Disney pretty much doubled the Star Wars licensing fee when they bought it, and… Read more »
Sadly most of the community saw this coming for months now. There had been no new releases in 6 months while Batman and then DCU kept rolling out each month.
The game system lives on in DC Universe so at least it will be easy to continue using Marvel minis alongside it if that helps to scratch the itch.
This is sad news indeed for all Marvel fans around this hobby.
Longshot… But watch this space for pre-painted plastics sometime in the future. Feel that would get the attention of a broader ‘less-than-typical’ gamer audience?
Pre-painted plastic might encroach a bit too much on WizKids’ license
Nooooooh,
just finished my GotG

And just started my X-Men. That is a hit in my stomach.
This is a shame for players of the game. I hadn’t got a game of it yet nor painted up the miniatures I do have, so wasn’t personally invested yet although I’d heard good things about the game. KM never seemed to put that much effort into it compared to Batman, and this does make me wary of getting into or stocking their lines in the future. I shall certainly be giving Harry Potter a wide berth.
Well they probably saw that the Batman Game was running fine and already having a license from Marvel for miniatures they thought why not make a Marvel Game and use some of our already existing models, but DC/Batman probably was the better selling one and so got more attention and the Suicide Squad starter box surely took a lot of their working power. And we don’t why they dropped the license, perhaps it was to expensive and they saw it coming so nothing new was released. And as you can see the Batman Game is supported, it’s 5 now or… Read more »
I suspect it is a licencing cost issue, never jumped on board as it was another system, a shame though. I am sure someone will look to pick up the license but Knights models once clean up were stunning, so its a limited no of companies that could hit that quality.
Lots of noise on the facebook group. You’d think KM had deliberately created a game and surrender the license.
Its always a concern with licensed games, especially with smaller companies. Batman still appeals though. Potter much less so but I am sure it will have its followers.
Bloody hell! I was really tempted to buy ALL the x-men models cos I watched the cartoon show when I was in high school. Another one bites the dust then. Guess I may get some BMG but again I’d like to keep it to the animated series. Harry Potter I will go no where near I’m afraid.
gutted for the people invested in Marvel, but you never know what’s round the corner so fingers crossed for the fans.
Potter is more my style, bring on the magic.
Whatever reason marvel got mixed by knight its their loss. Marvel had huge interest and at least by the groups its bigger than bmg so losing marvel is only going to be a problem down the line. Harry potter certainly isn’t going to be anywhere near as popular as marvel line. Hopefully another company gets the marvel licence and a new game and model line continue as for now at last the community will keep it going. No real loss knight are an awful company and completely untrustworthy. Wouldn’t buy into potter, could be gone in a few months
