The Karist Angel Descends Upon Maelstrom’s Edge!
May 28, 2015 by brennon
Spiral Arm Studios' Maelstrom's Edge has revealed another of their massive models for the Sci-Fi Kickstarter running right now with just a week or so left on the campaign. See what you think of the monstrous Karist Angel...
No Guardian Angel...
This monstrous beast certainly isn't going to be welcoming you to the gates of Heaven. In fact I'm fairly sure it will have sent more men to its death to make work for the proper angels!
Some fluff on the beast...
"The fully mature Angel adult is a truly terrifying creature to encounter in the flesh. Dwarfing even the tallest of humans, the Angel is a tapering mass of writhing tentacles, gelatinous membranes, and bristled claws, smelling of something akin to sulphur pits, and when encountered on the battlefield, usually ravenous with hunger and withdrawal.
The last sight many adversaries experience is the Angel's trembling, pain-wracked appendages closing around them as their terrifying 6 eyed and gaping mawed visage draws ever closer."
Despite its horrifying appearance it is quite the fascinating model and I like that it spends most of its time in space so on the ground it looks very strange indeed adding to its horror factor.
It also has the abilities to switch 'forms' allowing it to fly around the battlefield, turn into a natural-blade wielding monster or become a tank of a creature increasing its resilience.
As a model it stands around 60mm tall with an extra 10mm or so added on if you include the writhing tentacles on its back. They've also added a variety of different claw options on the sprue so you can mix up what they look like if you take multiples on the battlefield.
What do you think of this beast?

Hrm, the game doesn’t look like my thing (so far!) but what does peak my interest is getting Alastair Reynolds, as one of their writers! He happens to be one of my favourite hard SF authors so I might check out the stuff he writes. At any rate, I wish them all the best! 🙂
Something about this reminds me of the Shadows from Babylon 5.
yes with a mix of nid with the talons?
Vorlon encounter suit style stuff would make me pledge for this….
I would sat that there is a lot of the shadows about them yes. several sets of eyes above one another, the shape of the back tenatacles, the angles of the arms and even legs.
Babylon 5 was truly an influential series.
Great stuff.
so I took a second and closer look at this KS. .it is 5 days away from funding, currently at twice the target, but the total is scarily red-flag low, currently at “only” USD 41k. Apart from the books, box, sheets of tokens etc, there are several (I think 9 or 10 as of now) HIPS platic sprues …but only 500 backers. Does anybody here have any insights to how the creators are funding the productions of the game apart from KS? I cannot make the numbers add up unless they are quite heavily funded beforehand and mostly use KS… Read more »
I believe on one of the Dakka threads SAS said they have investors who have helped to fund the game to its current level of development. In many ways this is good as presumably the investors require a certain level of planning etc, more so than what a KS campaign need necessarily show. I think one reason for the low numbers is a lack of a decent rules doc or gaming video though they do have introductions for both. For me to invest in a game I ideally want several boxes ticked, the minis, the setting, the rules & the… Read more »
It’s remarkable how much work and development that SAS put into this project before the Kickstarter even launched. They’ve publicly stated that they have already invested quite a bit of money into the project – from private backers and presumably quite a bit out of their own pockets as well – before going to KS, which, when you think about it, would have to be the case, since nearly all of the expensive HIPS sprue molds have been created already. I think that right there is a Kickstarter first. Check out the stretch goal list . . . all the… Read more »
