Jared Leto’s Joker Makes His First Appearance
April 26, 2015 by dracs
The Clown Prince of Crime, possibly the most notorious villain in all of the DC Universe, is returning to cinemas in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie. Played by Jared Leto, this new Joker has just made his first appearance.
Hmm, not sure what I think of this. This is certainly a very different style to any Joker we have seen previously and to be honest it really needs to be given the seminal performances that have gone before.
I think this meme I stumbled across may have got the character's film development dead to rights.
I believe the pose Leto is making is supposed to be reminiscent of the Joker's origin story in The Killing Joke.
However, to my eye this doesn't look so much like the Joker as it does a Mad Max villain crossed with Marilyn Manson. I guess we shall have to wait for Suicide Squad to come out to see this Joker in action.
What do you think of Leto's Joker?

wow… maybe this one is as good as the last one… or even better. I saw a few movies from Leto and he is a True Actor, looking forward to see this. About the look, is perfect because is an update to the current times and aesthetic that the joker could have. This one could be elegant and refined but at them same time brutal and mad. Btw… did you ever heard the band Suicide Commando or Combichrist ? :3 those pretty much sums up the new Joker!
you think he’ll break out into song and do covers of “The pleasures of sin” an “Cause of death Suicide”,mid-scene?
It could perfectly be that way… but i would love to heard him say “A man can change the world with a bullet in the right place” 😉 ( i know, pretty damn old but delicious ) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbva6g3pBHw
In all seriousness… i expect some kind of industrial club scene to have a 25% – 35% probability of being in the movie…
They could have the joker get up on stage and join in on vocals with Skinny puppy performing “Who’s Laughing Now?”.
Sorry but he just looks like a gangbanger/street thug. This isn’t the Joker.
I’m not 100% convinced, but he’s a good actor so I’m going to hold judgment till I see his performance.
Eh, based on the picture alone I think the character design is lazy and needlessly in-your-face. Then again Leto is a professional who will most likely give good performance despite the design, so maybe the character will work better on the big screen.
That triple picture put me in mind of (left to right) Frank Sinatra, Kurt Cobain and Marilyn Manson.
Well said.
When I first saw that image it made me think Marilyn Manson rather than Joker.
He does kinda look like one of the dudes I’d see at a cybergoth club….
I think it’s a fantastic interpretation of the character.
Leto is a very good actor so the question to my mind is if the writing and direction will hit hit the right tone. Given how recent and well received Heath Ledger’s performance was I think they probably had to go for a different take on the character. The released Harley Quinn image makes me think the whole film will be tonally very different to The Dark Knight triology so this may work better in that context. I’m not convinced by this image alone but I think it is probably too easily interpreted out of context right now.
there’s already been some leaked pictures of him wearing the white suit from Dark Night Returns 🙂 so remember, most of these tattoos will be covered a lot of the time anyway 😛 and apparently the silver teeth might be because Batman knocked his teeth out after he killed Robin ( Jason Todd ) with a metal pipe, … if you look on his bicep theres a birds wing with a bird scull on it, I guess thats a Robin reference, anyway I kinda like this new version 🙂 there’s been dozens of different interpretations of the Joker over the… Read more »
I agree with your observations. Well said.
We shall see how it all plays out in the movie. In the picture we can definitely see a madman.
Well at least he hasn’t cut his face off and duct taped it back on this time…
It feels to me like dc trying to find exciting new interpretations of their characters recently, and in the process they’re kinda losing what made them interesting in the first place… Still Flash is good.
Flash is great! Wish more of the DC world was like that show.
Personally, I just can’t imagine the Joker ever sitting still long enough to get tattoos.
Idk I feel like he could do it. He’d just be laughing the entire time and probably kill the guy afterwards for hurting him. He probably goes through tattoo artists like Vader goes through Imperial officers. 🙂
I don’t think the character will have the tattoos in the movie. These are a nod to other versions of the Joker.
Dracs , whon says he had those Tats intentionally 😉
It appears that the newest Joker origin involves lots of meth and bath salts.
Heirs Joker, Love the paint job.
Get rid of the forehead tattoo, doesn’t sit right with the Joker.
Now I dont know a lot about the joker, I havent read the comics, only seen the movies and some cartoons as a kid. Lets not right off the movie yet based on one still. I found the image jarring, but still interesting
Really he has got an impossible job following on from Heath Ledger.. I don’t envy any actor trying to take up that mantle.
Also.. I can’t help but think ‘Dallas Buyer’s club’ when I see him !
After Jack Nicholson’s job of playing The Joker I thought it was an impossible job to follow that performance with someone else as the character but Heath Ledger ohly went an pulled it off expertly. Let’s just hope to god that it’s not a face off between his Joker and Ben Afleck in the part of Bat Man. Let’s hope they’ve found a new more fitting candidate to don The Bat Cape.
My only issue is the lack of rictus grin – pic cannot get a performance across but seems a bit forced. Will be worth a watch

Lose the tattoos I think
Looks different, all have their own joker in their head not one will be the same as another, always the same when such characters are shown to us, we all have our pre-conceptions in our heads. No matter what they do it will not suit all of you. I say you, because horror of horrors I don’t do Batman, haven’t seen the films even on the telly, i have no interest at all in the Batman industry, who plays him etc. But I do know that none of you will be completely pleased with the film in some manner, because… Read more »
No matter who takes over, they have to follow Heath Ledger, and that’s a tall ask. All that annoys me is the lack of consistency in the jokers basic features. If he has scars in one, then all who follow should too. Unless we get some ridiculous story about the greatest plastic surgeon in the world deciding to help out a psychopathic, schizophrenic, nutjob.
Personally I think Letos look is a little too “teen movie angst”.
There’s been loads of interpretations of the character. The Ledger version has a precursor in The Man Who Laughs but that version doesn’t mean all the comic book versions have to be like that, anymore than it means all the movie versions have to be like Ledger. Or that the Ledger version should have been like Jack Nicholson’s (or Nicholson’s like Cesar Romero’s).
