New Irish Elite Hearthguard From Footsore Miniatures
December 9, 2017 by thisisazrael
Despite having a huge hype train rolling right now for Gangs of Rome, Footsore Miniatures has still found time to produce some awesome new Irish Fianna.
"The Fianna were made up of the biggest and best warriors in later Irish armies. They wielded a variety of hand weapons of high quality due to their status."
"Though the Fianna would have been wealthy in terms of Irish society, armour was very rare and the vast majority would have fought without it."
Each set up Irish elite Hearthguard warriors contains four metal miniatures and it's worth noting that spear banners and bases are not supplied.
Will you be painting yourself up a mini Gerry (@Avernos)?

@thisisazrael not sure there is anything small about @avernos. The man is part Irish giant but that model in the top row second from the left has all the characteristics of an ungroomed Gerry.
@noyjatat – I know for a fact there are legends written in ancient rock formations that tell of Gerry’s giant parts. @avernos – Time to play “dress up as a mini”?
If you have a Legion bootcamp I’ll dress up as a different character every day. But barefoot and bollock nekkid isn’t always a winner with our weather. Also I’m not sure they’d let me in the pub
Ungroomed? If an Irish Giant has pants on he is ready for the formal ball.
No man was received into the Fianna until his hair was first braided. He was then chased by selected runners through a forest, no man could be received into the Fianna if a single braid of his hair was loosened by a branch as he ran through the forest.
I guess I’ll never make it into the Fianna, I wonder if the Red Branch are after any knights instead 😉
I’ll be writing “I don’t need another Dark Age army” out x1000
Why not write out I want an Irish warband once. In fact with the right pick of minis you can play irish, Scot, pict, and scotti with them. Four battle boards for the price of one force. By grabthars hammer what a savings
Well I have enough Welsh to kick off any Brythonic army, but these wouldn’t sit comfortably next to my clunky Gripping Beast boyos
Those are really nice.
Never hurts to have more variety in the ranks. Really spoilt for choice for models these days.
What era are they? Viking period/ High Cross?
In my mind the early Irish are always in very vivid colours. Its reading too much ‘Cattle Raid of Cooley’ where each area had its own coloured outfit.
While based for the dark age/viking age they work for roughly 400 years on either side. Although the helmets will date them slightly otherwise they could even work for kerns in the 14th century. I have details on the dress I can dig out
did they have icons/clan symbols on their shields?
Gerry had already received these and is currently cleaning them up. This almost completes the celtic warrior nation. Just awaiting mounted irish warlord and pict warlord on chariot 😉
Was going to say, resist Gerry resist. But seems that ship has sailed, hit the iceberg and gone down with all hands. Can’t wait to see the full force. What’s next Pagan Rus??
*hisses*
I have picked up a couple of smallish warbands, Romano-Britons to throw against the Picts, some Anglo Saxons to bulk out what I have and Saracens to face the new Normans when they come out. Now I just have to wait for the Footsore Vikings and Normans
The Kerns usually used wicker shields sometimes covered in leather. Mainly cos it was dirt cheap
true, but you can pick up wicker shields from footsore as well as leather covered and the majority of the clothing would still work. The small wicker shields from the picts would be ideal
some nice troops, may need some to save Culloden battle field?
