New Iconic Characters Come To SAGA: The Crescent & The Cross In 2016
December 11, 2015 by brennon
Gripping Beast have shown off two more characters from the Crusading era that you will be able to pick up next year for SAGA: The Crescent & The Cross. See what you think of both El Cid and Peter The Hermit that were previewed over on social media...
El Cid
This was one of the films that I watched when I was younger and really enjoyed. The battle scenes were fantastic and really got me interested in the Medieval period. Historically El Cid was a fantastic fellow too and well worth reading up on...
You can see him here charging forward on his horse with a look that is actually quite close to the actor who played him in the film, Charlton Heston. He also has the darker features of the real world El Cid too. It's neat to see him pop up to lead your armies into battle. Maybe they will even do a 'dead' version of him sat upright on his horse?
Peter The Hermit
Following on from El Cid we have Peter The Hermit who is less of a military powerhouse but no less influential during this period of history. He was influential in stirring up support from Europe for the First Crusade and even led his own rabble through towards the Holy Land.
Sadly the Peoples Crusade ended in disaster but Peter escaped, returning to Constantinople. Interestingly one of my favourite writers from the period, Guibert of Nogent, wrote about Peter and had some interesting things to say about him. He noted in particular that he was a 'fallen star'.
Guibert of Nogent was a rather candid writer at the time who talked of many of his contemporaries without a filter for the most part. It's very interesting reading about the Crusades from his viewpoint especially.
What do you think of these two?

El Cid will certainly find his way into my collection!
They do look more realistically proportioned than GB usual (very nice) stuff.
Would be nice to see a comparison pic to one of their other C&C minis.
Anyhow, lovely figures!
Ah, if it wasn’t for Charlton Heston and that film I’d have completely ballsed up that exam on Early Medieval Spain when I was in uni hahaha
El Cid does have great dynamic pose. Peter not so much.
Very nice miniatures, I want them both!
