The Hellblazer is Ready for the Constantine TV Trailer!

The TV show I am most excited about this year has to be the upcoming NBC series around my favourite white collar wizard Constantine, an excitement that is reaching fever pitch with the unveiling of the new trailer!
The trailer opens with John Constantine, professional exorcist and "petty dabbler" of the Dark Arts, having checked himself into a mental asylum. However, things are never simple for the laughing magician and he soon gets drawn back into a world of spirits and daemons and most likely out of his depth.
So, what does this trailer tell us? Well, firstly that Constantine is back to being the blond cynical Brit we all know and love, though minus the smokes and with a suitably tuned down accent for an American audience.
Secondly, he is once again on a mission to save his soul from damnation, going up against angels, daemons and a point-of-view side character.
The best bit about this is that it is apparently based upon the Hellblazer series, rather than the New 52 comics, which saw Constantine undergo a bit of streamlining to fit in more with super-hero genre.
All in all, I am hopeful for this. It has the look right and the plot sounds promising, with rumours of Hellblazer regular Papa Midnight as the main antagonist of the series.
What does it all add up to? Well, someone tell the Supernatural fans that it's time for Castiel to give John his coat back.
Will you be tuning in for Constantine's TV debut?
I for one am very suspicious of any adaptation of Hellblazer… John Constantine is a first class scumbag who turn everything to shit and still manages to more or less save the world, and he should remain so : him and Mainstream/Hollywood don’t mix. If they were to do justice to Hellblazer on TV, especially in the United States, it would be cancelled fifteen minutes into the first episode, or confined to the late night hours. On the other hand, this is probably more an adaptation of the new 52 Constantine… A new, younger, sleeker, nicer, and (dare I say… Read more »
And yes, this is probably more the “new 52” Constantine in a series inspired by Hellblazer. And Papa Midnite as an antagonist is just a ludicrous thought when you have so many demons, wozards and witches to choose from… Ultimately, however, the true antagonist to John Constantine is himself. Quite litterally.
Heh, I went to show this to my oh-I-don’t-do-that-comic-stuff-anymore wife and she promptly rolled her eyes, told me she had already seen it and then went on to explain why she (as a closet Constantine – and Dresden – fan) was cautiously optimistic for the series. I have to say though that from what little I read of Constantine back in the day, I would tend to agree with Romain. Even after shows like Deadwood, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones (I guess – still haven’t seen it yet) I’m not convinced that you could set the right tone for… Read more »
There’s no way a network TV series will give us something that faithful to the character. We’ll get a halfway house version instead. Though don’t underestimate the ability of premium cable to pull it off. In its own way, True Detective was as dark and complex as anything Hellblazer has done.
I took a look at this yesterday looks interesting, the question is will it be part of the bigger DC universe? as i think they may try to name drop in passing etc. There was talk a while back about doing a JLD movie and i think Gullermo del toro was to direct
A series like this, one way or the other is gonna have some bad points, as well as some good points. The Bad: It wont be true to the comics. Meaning fans will automatically hate it. Forgetting of course no movie or tv series is ever “true” to the books/comics 98% of the time because that doesn’t attract others, or make a profit off a product. Hmm weird. It might be cancelled after a single season as well, shows like this rarely last. The Good: Its a small or big step in the proper direction getting us away from the… Read more »
Well there are currently plans for a film adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman
