Head Into The Heart Of Darkness With Studio Tomahawk’s Congo
April 3, 2015 by brennon
Studio Tomahawk, the makers of games such as SAGA and Muskets & Tomahawks have a new game for you on the horizon called Congo which has you delving into the Heart of Darkness in the late 19th Century and exploring Africa...
This is a time of adventure and mystery as you either lead a Scientific Expedition, Tribal War Party or Zanzibaris Slavers through the heat and wilderness of the jungle in search of treasure and more.
As examples of some of the scenarios you might run into you could find yourself face to face with the Great Ape that is worshiped by a cannibalistic tribe, discover the fate of an old expedition into the jungle, or maybe even hunt down some explorers yourself as bandits.
Congo sounds like it could be a lot of fun and could build a real narrative on the tabletop ripe for amazing stories and daring feats of adventure. It might also allow you to explore the darker side of the colonial powers in Africa and how that all plays out.

Heart of Darkness here we come…
What do they drink in the Congo?
UM BONGO!
..with just a splash of colonial white supremacy!
Having a slaver faction in a historical game seems a bit crass. Couldn’t it have been something a little less barbaric but still on the bad side, like diamond hunters or poachers?
Doing a game like this is a minefield of potential casual racism. I’m prepared to reserve judgment until we get more info on the game.
Interesting
To me this is only a game and nothing else, only what some people want to make it.
I enjoy Saga and Muskets and so I see no reason why this game shouldn’t be as good. I must admit I did enjoy Chris Peers Heart of Africa years ago.
I wish Studio Tomahawk luck with this project and I hope I can get more information at Salute.
Really?
How did this get past any companies boardroom?
‘You know what’d make a great game? Playing out colonial expansion in Africa!’
I mean they do make ‘Muskets and Tomohawks’ so they are clearly already down with the colonial expansion thing. They should stick to Saga.
I’m interested. I have a whole load of of old Wargames Foundry / Mark Copplestone Subsaharan African figures which are really nice, and liked the look of (never actually played) Chris Peers’ games. However… There is a huge risk that if this is done insensitively that it could be really offensive. The Studio Tomahawk link isn’t terribly encouraging either, although it’s possible that it’s just the non-native English writing making it look like it might be worse than it actually will be. We play games with Nazis and all other kinds of horrific people in, so I don’t think colonial… Read more »
