Great Escape Release New Dead Man’s Hand Starter Set For 2022
January 18, 2022 by brennon
Great Escape Games has started taking pre-orders for a new version of their Wild West Dead Man's Hand Starter Set for 2022. This did see a release previously but there is now a slimmed-down option over on their webstore.

The new Starter Set comes with three frames of their plastic 28mm Gunfighters which will form the basis of your gangs. You could use them as Cowboys, Lawmen, Outlaws or Desperados trying to stake their claim on the frontier.

As well as the miniatures, you also get a Dead Man's Hand Rulebook, a Card Deck, Game Markers and Dice.
This new set doesn't include the terrain piece like the previous set but it still offers up a nice entry point into the Wild West and Great Escape Games' skirmish wargame. With fifteen miniatures to play around with, it's a good way to make a fair few gangs if you like.
You can find out more about Dead Man's Hand HERE by having a flick through their sample rulebook too. Coming in at £35, it's also not too expensive either considering all the extra gubbins you get.
What do you make of this 2022 version of the Starter Set?

The playing cards are a nice touch for a western setting – Texas Hold ‘Em all the way!
Ooh yeah fantastic for gaming all the westarn’s shoot outs of the film’s.
Definitely a downgrade from the previous starter set. The pre-painted 4Ground building is gone, the 2 metal gangs (Lawmen and Outlaws) have been replaced by three plastic sprues, and the dice went from 4 to 2.
The 4 ground kit wasn’t that amazing being a basic frame for a tent and a chimney, it was a nice addition but nothing that would be significantly missed.
The metal gangs are fantastic but the new plastics are an excellent piece of design and sculpting work from Great Escape, very versatile and probably a bit more familiar feeling for anyone jumping over from other modern plastic ranges. Gives new players many more options out of the box.
I will agree cutting the dice back is a bit skimpy, though still playable.
Our first DMH starter set was indeed amazing, but it was limited edition and sold out (I hope you got one!). It pre-dated our plastic figures and we wanted to produce a new starter set with the plastic figures. One advantage with this one is that it is easier for us to ship to our trade partners across the world. The 2021 starter set weighed over 1000g. This one is 600g. It’s very educating to be involved in these projects because we get to see all aspects from cost to shipping, etc. We hope that profits from this set will… Read more »
Personally I’d rather have plastic than metal for assembly reasons and the one mdf building in previous set was nothing special.
A starter set for £35 is good value when you compare it to the likes of wild west exodus where you’d get the rules set or one faction for that sort of money, so a start costs 3 times as much.
Agreed, excellent value and all you would ever need for the game for the most part.
I still love the metals, but the plastics are amazing and much more accessible for a starter.
A even better value starter than the previous one. Excellent stuff from Great Escape Games. Thoroughly recommend picking this up if you have ever wanted to play out a western on the tabletop, great quick simple and fun game.
Do I really need another game? Like a lot of us probably not but sometimes it’s nice to have a game of something different. I’ve bought a few starter sets over the years and some have gone on to being a major part of my hobby others have not grown far beyond the starter set yet still remain a firm favourite to break out now and again. For a starter set I think they are spot on with their pricing on this.
I’ve been looking for the old starter set, so Thank You for posting this!
And £35 is around the right price for a starter box, to pull in new players who want to try the game without a massive up front cost acting as a barrier to entry.
