Games Workshop Website Changing Today?
April 9, 2014 by brennon
Games Workshop appear to be working on their website changes at this very moment and dropped this little teaser image in an email to mention that it's worth waiting for.
Above it looks like a plastic sprue for a Space Marine Commander figure. What we'll be getting with the new site, we shall wait and see, but hopefully it's all for the better.
I don't imagine we'll be seeing Specialist Games there at any rate!

Either they drop prices massively or I’m not interested. I suppose getting Forgeworld and regular kits over the same site could be interesting.. Oh, wait, I buy them from my LGS at a discount…
A surprise price increase most likely.
Or possibly a surprise rewrite of the background.
Oh wait, neither of these would be surprises…
Its probably just rolling all the storefronts together, FW GW and BL all under one roof, I’d love to be wrong though.
The marine on the sprue is actually a remake of a space marine captain from Games Day 1991
I am waiting for the announcement
“Due to the change in fonts on the new website, there will unfortunately have to be a price rise in the cost of our box sets to help cover the costs of this increased expenditure”
that’s not the forge world symbol, it’s similar, but it’s just a generic skull & cog.
Wasnt that the symbol for the old skull token sticker things?
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee62/tallarn_bucket/skulz_004.jpg That was this one @torros
…and yes now I look at it again @vendile it is a little different from the Forge World one. Probably just working with the whole mechanicum thing they are using to explain the site being down.
yeah..such a long time ago, I couldnt remember what they really looked like
I’d love it if when the GW website goes live again and you select your country of origin, the main screen is a new website for INFINITY with the simple words across the front ASSIMILATION COMPLETE
For all those who are still in to their GW games, I hope it’s something good and you really do have your patience rewarded.
Surely all it is, is bringing all three sites together under one roof, possibly an area with videos?
Not entirely sure why there is such interest.
If, however, there is an entire back catalogue of all GW miniatures which can be ordered on demand, and PARTS, like the good ol’ days, then I will be pleased!
I know its not very exciting for most people, but if I can order GW kits and FW kits in a single order, then that’s quite exciting to me.
I think they are just stream lining the site to make it easier to navigate on portable devices and make shopping easier. Everything I have seen and heard says Forge World will not be available on it, at least at the time of launch, its possible that could be something further down the road.
Hmm, make shopping easier… GW will include a one-click buy everything in the web store for every range with one click? o_O
Just remember : “Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment…”
I don’t get it? So if GW combines with FW and BL to form one smooth running website whats the fuss? I feel like people just want to sit and moan about GW no matter what they do. Honestly their models aren’t that expensive, if you take mantic for example Deadzones booster packs are £9.99 for a set of 5, so that would be almost £2 per model, GW space marines only work out fractionally more expensive. Honestly guys we play table top games as a hobby, and as a hobby goes its an expensive one. So have a little… Read more »
I take exception whenever anybody tries to tout GW as “one of the first in the miniatures ring,” or anything close to saying they were first, original, or in any way creators of the genre. H.G. Wells wrote Little Wars nearly a century before GW showed up, and that was itself based on tactical wargames teaching tools used by REAL generals going back centuries. GW itself was started as a provider of minis to D&D players, which itself is a game that was based originally on wargaming rules. Which makes GW a spinoff of a spinoff, at best. The people… Read more »
I’m far from an apologist for GW and I don’t play their games or buy their miniatures, but to downplay their impact on the grounds that they didn’t invent miniatures or wargaming is misleading at best. Yes, there were fantasy and sci-fi minis around before GW started making them, and Citadel itself was originally set up to manufacture Ral Partha minis, but to compare the industry and the market in the 70s and early 80s to where it was even by the late 80s completely misrepresents the situation.
My guess is, the Space Marine Commander sprue will be made available as a one time offer at RRP, along with a subscription fee to access the site.
All they seem to do nowadays is justify penny pinching and chase profits to keep the stockholders happy, rather than their customers.
I’m pretty shocked at how long the launch is taking them.
In reality it should just be a case of pointing the DNS at new ip addresses. Or an even simpler configuration on the servers itself.
Perhaps there is something much more complex going on that requires all dns records to be fully propagated before switch over.
But losing a full days sales, is never a good idea!
It is a built-in excuse for a 1.3% decline in quarterly results, however.
OK, got out the calculator, more like a 1.1% decline. Small, but not insignificant for a company’s bottom line. Makes you wonder how much their site serves as an actual sales generator versus how much it exists as a giant advert/MSRP device … “Wow, I got a box of 10 plastic minis for only $40 at the comic shop, and GW wanted $50 for them. I sure ripped those guys off!”
If you’re using the same DNS servers but changing the address of the web server that a DNS entry points to, that can be done pretty much immediately if you plan for it (you simply lower the TTL in advance). There’s not really any “propagation” to speak of, that’s only an issue when you’re editing the domain name record itself to point to new DNS servers – and if you’ve timed that to coincide with moving your webservers… well, frankly you’re an idiot. As someone who’s had to move three web applications across servers in the past month (insourcing from… Read more »
They are still arguing over there cut over the profits for Wonga’s new advert on their website. LOL

Unless the above is something more diverse and interesting GW has produced a marine – with lots of skulls on it as there this is what our customers want – and they wonder why they are losing customers – there more creative juices in the nutsack of a week dead gnat
That was my first thought and it’s a good move… Depending on their shipping policies (free shipping over…)
Looks like the Marine Captain GW released in the early 90’s
Looking forward to seeing what it’s all about.
There are things that I hope they’re doing, but seriously doubt they are…namely bringing back the Historicals line, at least as print on demand or ebook versions.
What I expect is that specialist games stuff is going to completely vanish, and prices will go up…
I wonder, what is the hold-up for the relaunch? How long can it possibly take to open up the site’s code, find the “Warhammer 40,000” menu, and edit the “Armies” section to add “Squats” … “HQ” “Troops” “Rare” “Elite” “Fast Attack” (OK, maybe skip that) and “Heavy Support” — right?
Well that wasnt worth waiting for
I can see the new site in NZ … One big catalogue and no fluff.
At least FW and BL are still separate, so the Death Korp army will still be cheaper than a Cadian one down this side of the world.
Oh and parts of it still aren’t finished …
I found some “This page is under construction” notices.
Oh and that free gift … will cost you (NZ) $190.01 minimum order.
I’ll assume they are still working on it because all I see now is a basic website that is woefully inferior to GW’s old website which, though a little clunky for finer items (such as the FAQ or paints) was pretty damn classy for everything else. If this is the actual site and not a placeholder then I am lost for words.
