The Game Of Thrones Card Game Gains The Deadly Ilyn Payne Soon
February 7, 2016 by brennon
We've had a look at some of these cards within the A Game of Thrones: The Card Game already but now Fantasy Flight Games have shared the preview for True Steel which will be part of this first cycle of Chapter Packs. It includes some rather awesome cards...
Inside this set you would assume we're going to get Ser Baristan Selmy (there on the cover art) although you can never be sure with these sets. You do however get this array which you can see below.
Taking a look at this we have the Old Bear's Raven which is perfect for making sure that Old Bear doesn't get taken out by Tears Of Lys. Anyone else also gains Stealth which is such a good keyword in the game and perfect defence against the Greyjoys.
Following on from that the Maester's Chains (see the top card) is great for removing condition attachments like Milk of the Poppy which blank text boxes. Finally Ward allows you to actually bring another character into the service of the Starks. This is very thematic with Theon of course.
Now, we also have additional cards starting with Ser Ilyn Payne who you might know as the man who killed Ned Stark...
He has a very high marshalling value and isn't a Lord so you can't reduce it easily BUT he has a brutal action. You can let the other player put into play a three cost character and then immediately kneel Ser Ilyn Payne to hack their head off and kill them. A brutal tactic...
We also have the Small Council Chamber which is perfect for making sure that your power isn't up for the taking by regular challenges. Lannisters have a lot of intrigue on the table so this works very nicely for them.
This CAN be stolen by the likes of Greyjoys though who could snap this up AND the power on it. However, you're going to have to be lucky to pull that off as the Lannisters will defend this staunchly. This is also not a loyal location so you could drop this into any deck.
What do you think of this new spread?

Holy Carp! Ilyn Payne is aptly named. I’ll have to crown him before he gets to my dragons! The new 10 gold plot will get him into play. Whilst it gives your opponent three gold, if you’re running Lannister intrigue then you can strip their hand first so they have nothing to spend it on. Bring in Ilyn in and get to work clearing the board too.
Now I not only fear the throwing axes of the Greyjoys but the nasty execution potential of the Lannisters. Eeep…
