GF9 Unveils Operation Unthinkable & Launches Clash Of Steel
February 16, 2024 by avernos
Following on from the Christmas teaser video Gale Force Nine is finally introducing the world to "Operation Unthinkable" through their latest tabletop miniatures game, Clash of Steel, set to hit shelves in April 2024. This game invites players to delve into an alternate history where the aftermath of World War II ignites a new conflict in Europe by 1948, rekindling the flames of war across the continent.
Clash of Steel // Gale Force Nine
Clash of Steel is not just a game; it's an invitation to step into a world of strategic depth and relentless action, offering a narrative-driven experience that captures the intensity of warfare. Players will find themselves at the heart of a reimagined historical conflict, commanding forces in a series of dynamic, mission-based gameplay that ensures each battle is fraught with tension and excitement.
The game sets itself apart with its highly detailed multi-part plastic miniatures, representing experimental and never-before-seen military machines that add a thrilling layer of strategy and realism to the gameplay. From epic tank-on-tank combat to the strategic deployment of forces, Clash of Steel promises a gaming experience that is both immersive and visually spectacular.
Players can choose from one of four nations with unique strengths and strategic advantages. Whether leading the Soviet forces to a relentless push westward, embodying the spirit of the British fighting for King and country, or commanding the tactical might of the Americans and Germans, every decision on the battlefield could turn the tide of war.

Key features of Clash of Steel include:
- Dynamic Mission-Based Gameplay: Ensuring a unique experience with every playthrough, the game's mission-based structure keeps the action unpredictable and engaging.
- Alternative History Setting: Offers a fascinating narrative backdrop, allowing players to explore a world where the conflict of World War II persists into the late 1940s.
- Highly Detailed Miniatures: Each miniature is digitally crafted with exquisite detail, bringing the intensity and scale of battles to life on the tabletop.
- Epic Tank-on-Tank Combat: Experience the thrill of manoeuvring tanks across the battlefield, engaging in strategic duels that test your tactical acumen.

The Clash of Steel Starter Sets are designed to provide everything needed for aspiring commanders to begin their journey, including rules, miniatures, dice, tokens, and much more. Aimed at both seasoned veterans of tabletop gaming and newcomers alike, Clash of Steel is set to deliver an unforgettable experience.
The game itself is based on Battlefront's Flames of War mechanics and miniatures range, but by being released through Gale Force Nine it separates it from FoW and I imagine this is to allow them to focus on the introduction of paper panzers and possibly other vehicles without muddying the waters of what is allowable in games of FoW or impacting the meta there for tournament players. Although the fact they do use FoW statlines means I have no doubt that players will start to shuffle these into their lists for friendly games.
How friendly they remain after you've had to deal with a super heavy paper tank is another matter.
Prepare to command your forces, engage in epic battles, and rewrite history in Clash of Steel.
