Fria Ligan Get You Going With Tales From The Loop Starter Set
March 3, 2020 by brennon
You might know from last week's news but the Tales From The Loop world based on Simon Stålenhag’s and the roleplaying game by Fria Ligan is getting a TV series soon via Amazon. Well, we're also going to be seeing a new Tales From The Loop Starter Set to go alongside it if folks want a taste of the world.
This new Starter Set will come with everything that you need to get going in the game with your friends. Inside you'll find...
- An illustrated rulebook explaining how to play the game
- The complete adventure called The Recycled Boy by Nils Hintze
- Five pre-generated characters ready to play
- A large, full-colour map of the land of the Loop
- Ten engraved custom dice
Coming in at around half of the price of the core rulebook and with a complete adventure which guides you through the mechanics of Tales From The Loop, this sounds like it would be a lot of fun for someone who wants to try out the game. The addition of the map and the dice is nice to see as well.
Of course, if you're a veteran roleplayer then you might want to just get the Core Book. But, for those being brought in by the TV show, this seems like a nice way to experience a bit of tabletop fun.
Are you tempted to pick up this set when it releases in April?

nooo nooo noo…. do not need… won’t play…
but the artwork…. damn it!
Yeah, I’ve got a couple of Simon’s artbooks…as well as the RPGs showcasing his work…and he is amazing!
Don’t really get the appeal of playing a kid in a game, but I suppose it’s good for kids.
It’s a rather refreshing change of pace knowing you can’t/wouldn’t do half of the stuff an adult would. It changes up a lot of scenarios and encounters. Always nice to roleplay outside of your normal bubble once in a while.
Get my players to stop being murder hobos and looting every corpse they find? I don’t think that will happen.
I detest ‘murder hobos’. When I entered my 20th year as a DM/GM I started telling new players that if they only wanted to be ‘murder hobos’ then they should just play a video game and not waste their time or mine. These days I call down the thunder on players and make life so difficult that they turn a new leaf or leave the game.
Ok, I’m getting off my soapbox now. Sorry….
I’ve been a GM since 1982… my players don’t always play murder hobos… but if they commit a crime in a setting where crimes get investigated, there are consequences, especially if there are forensics and such to track them down. My gaming group is a handful of friends. They are unlikely to turn over a new leaf and you don’t kick friends out of a game. If you ask someone to leave the group… they were never friends… just gamers. We play to have a laugh and get away from the tedium of working for a living. As long as… Read more »
There are some great games out there that let you crawl back into the skin of a character that views the world with (far) less cynicism and more wonder. Who doesn’t care about politics or need to worry about job & bills. World of Darkness: Innocents, Little Fears, Kids on Bikes, and definitely the great works of Tales from the Loop and Things from the Flood, (and many others escaping my mind at the moment). Heh, even my favorite Star Wars RPG version…West End Games…offered “Kid” as a character template from the get-go. There’s something to be said for shedding… Read more »
I agree! You sound like a person I’d like to have in one of my RPG groups.
OTT gonna stock it @brennon?
You’d have to ask @warzan about that one heh
haha 😉 😉

What version of the game is the one thay have a 80s one 90s one and is their not a third game as well Ben.
Tales From The Loop – 80s
Tales From The Flood – 90s
got yah the 80s are they not the same game with the flood being like level two?
I’ve got both. Tales from the Loop (80’s) you play pre-teens (think ET, Goonies, Stranger Things, etc.) and character death (though not consequences) is off the table. (NO killing kids!) Tales from the Flood (90’s) you play teenagers and things get more deadly (killing off teens is okay, the little bastards 🙂 )…but I wouldn’t call it “level two” in the sense that it is now more advanced or anything. Just a different setting and playstyle. I’m all-in on both (and most/all of Free Leagues games…Coriolis, Vaesen, Forbidden Lands, the Mutant Year Zero games, and Aliens) and the products are… Read more »
Sounds like it could be an interesting game I’ll go an see some background about the game’s.
Love this game! I have the Core book but will snag the box set as well. I think it will help draw new players in. ?
While I’m not generally a fan of OSR (Old School Roleplaying), I am still an old-school roleplayer…and there is just something about holding and opening a “boxed set” that brings back the nostalgic waves.
