The Freeborn Skark Squad Swoops Into Gates Of Antares
May 6, 2016 by brennon
Over on social media Paul Sawyer showed off another miniature for Beyond The Gates Of Antares. Here we have a look at the Skark Squad for the Freeborn of Warlord Games' Sci-Fi wargame...
This is an insane looking creature but I can safety say that I have never seen anything like this before! The rider atop this is one of the Mhagris and he seems like he's rather proud of his mount.
I think we have to praise the warrior that first saw one of these creatures and decided 'maybe we can fly one of those?'. I think that a lot of folks died in the process...
Are you a player of the Freeborn and if so what do you think of this piece?

Love it, true sci-fi weirdness
great looking alien ride! refreshing to finally see a SF wargame bring out actually properly alien looking for once, bodes very well for the future if this is what they are capable of.
Would not have expected that from Warlord. So organic. It’s a far cry from a Panzer IV.
What the hell is that nasty thing!? Warlord have really turned up the weird to eleven with this guy. Between these and those skimmer/bike things they’ve just released the freeborn are looking pretty tempting
@abstractalien sorry for the down vote, I went to hit the thumbs up and my stupid sausage fingers betrayed me and now I can’t take it back 🙁
I’ve up voted abstractalien for you, so alls better
I really want to see that with paint on. I’ve picked up a couple of Freeborn boxes on Well Known Auction Site so I guess they’re my faction. I’d like to like these and I’m struggling.
That first pic looks like it’s an organic Sopwith Camel.
looks good, at least we know what seagulls will look like in a million years?
Uh..wow. I better be a very early WIP, cause it’s awful rough round all the edges.
You’ll get there… 😛
That is truly unlike anything else I have seen from a war gaming company. Warlord undeniably picks up points for originality and pure Sci Fi weirdness here.
Hmm… I really dislike this… As a Gates of Antares model.
The weird flying thing would make an amazing Cthulhu creature, and the rider would look awesome in some post-Apocalyptic setting, but the two together in a hard-ish SF setting just don’t work at all for me. They don’t even look like they fit in with the look of the Freeborn, from what I’ve seen and how I’ve been expecting them to turn out.
I wonder what the rationale in the background is for these guys?
@angelicdespot – I believe from memory these are one of the ‘alien’ mercenary units used by the freeborn. Hence the differing style – not sure if they can show up in other armies as well.
Thanks for the explanation @dags. I still don’t like it (for Antares) though!
Love it, I’ve been wondering about how these would look since the game came out.
That looks really cool.
Too weird for my taste. Its like Cthulhu and Zubat had a weird baby
