Fox Brings Magic the Gathering to the Big Screen!
January 14, 2014 by dracs
You read that headline right my friends, according to Hollywood Reporter 20th Century Fox plan on bringing Magic the Gathering, the world's most popular trading card game to the cinema!
I mentioned in an article last Summer how Magic the Gathering has a rich and ultimately untapped background to be drawn upon and it will be pretty cool to see this realized on the big screen.
For those of you who don't play the game, the basis for Magic the Gathering is that the players are beings known as Planeswalkers; powerful magic users who are able to walk between the various dimensions, known as planes, and summon various beings from them to do battle.
Apparently, Fox plan for this to become the start of a new film franchise on par with Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings. The series will be overseen by writer-producer Simon Kinberg, who is also responsible for the X-Men and new Fantastic Four franchises.
If I were to guess, I would say that the series will most likely focus around established Planeswalker character Jace Beleren.
Jace is often described as being one of the youngest Planeswalkers as well as the most morally ambiguous. This makes him the most interesting and the most likely to have a character arch portrayed in film.
As yet we can't say whether or not the film will be any good. All we can do is hope for the best and get excessively excited by the prospect of watching Planeswalkers battle.
What are your thoughts in regards to the classic card game being made into a movie?

Hasbro seem determined to get as many of their products onto the big screen as possible. They’ve already done Battleship and have the likes of Monopoly, Action Man, and even Hungry, Hungry Hippos in development. Lets hope they put more effort into the script for Magic than they did for Battleship.
You forgot the awful Dungeons and Dragons movie (but that’s forgivable because I want to forget it). Monopoly is a terrible game (by design). I can’t imagine it being a good movie. My vision for this movie: Scene 1: Fade to a musty mystical library. Our hero, the Planeswalker, pulls an ancient tome from a shelf, blows off some dust and puts it in his satchel for later reading. Suddenly, his eyes widen in surprise as he catches a glimpse of something that was hidden behind the book. Could it be? Is it possible? An ancient and still unsealed booster… Read more »
errr… r/unsealed/unopened/… lost my head there.
“He steels himself with resolve, reaches for the package, and…”
Um… sorry, I got distracted…
So… hoping for the kobold then?
*Gasp*… how did you guess my secret fetish ?
…only to find that the rare is a useless FLYING CARPET!
So when Sam says the new Fantastic Four movies…is he talking about the two that came out several years ago? Because if he is I have severe doubts about the M:TG movie.
And yes I too wish I could forget the DnD movie. Would pay a small fortune to have it removed from memory.
This is the man who wrote the infamous “X-Men 3 : the last stand”, “Abraham Lincoln : Vampire Hunter”, “XXX : State of the Union”, “Jumper”, and “Mr and Mrs Smith”…
On the other hand, he produced (but didn’t write) “X-Men : First Class” and wrote or co-wrote both of the Sherlock Holmes movies with Robert Downey Jr.
He’s also worked on the next Fantastic Four movie, due in 2015.
So… Could be fun to watch, but I still have serious doubts.
Oh that does not sound good…not a single one of the movies he wrote was worth a price of admission.
Producing is a nice way of saying “gave other people money to make something” more or less.
To be fair I did enjoy the Sherlock Holmes movies….but I think a large part of it was saved thanks to Robert Downey Jr.
The characters should actually play games against each other whilst providing a running narrative like in the Yu-Gi-Oh cartoons.
For the love of… Please. Don’t. Do. It.
Fantastic card game, leave it at that.
…on the other hand, if they did get it right…EPIC!
They could do it right by making it a musical!
Already been done. Someone made a MtG puppet musical on YouTube. It was crap
Link or it didn’t happen.
Here’s the trailer.

Oh my… This really is terrible !
Thanks…
Would much prefer to see a film of something like Warmachine
Unfortunately, I can’t give your comment more than one thumbs-up.
(But I would if I could.)
