Fight For The Iron Throne In FFG’s Westeros Intrigue
February 6, 2014 by brennon
In the run up to the release of the new series of Game of Thrones on HBO we see another board/card game coming out from Fantasy Flight Games. See what you think of Knizia's Westeros Intrigue...
The game seems to come from the world of the television show, and that's certainly not a bad thing, it's going to make it appeal to a lot more people that way. Personally I would have loved to see artwork rather than screenshots but that's just me.
Game wise you will be building a pyramid to represent the court surrounding the Iron Throne where what you play in lower layers effects what you play above. It seems like a quick game that while relying on 'back up' and support doesn't seem overly themed in the world of Game of Thrones.
I guess the intention here is to create a game with the label of Game of Thrones that is accessible to all. It might play very well as a warm up for a larger game.
Something for you?

It looks like you could play this with just coloured pieces of card. The GoT elements don’t seem like anything more than window dressing.
I think you’re right. Checked the preview on the FFG site, the game appears to be a simple “build a pyramid of cards while matching the colours” game. Sating that though, I’m keeping an eye on this one. Mr Knizia is a very talented game designer, renowned for creating very simple but tactically rewarding games that make you think. Ingenious is a prime example of this.
