Fight Dark Age Battles With Warlord’s Shield Wall + New Starter Armies
February 26, 2018 by brennon
Warlord Games have announced the coming of their new Shield Wall supplement for Hail Caesar. This addition to the game helps you bring massed battles to the tabletop featuring armies of the period and also provides rules for smaller scale engagements too.
"Shield Wall is a supplement for Hail Caesar which introduces the main battles, armies and personalities of the Dark Ages in the British Isles from around 400AD up to 1000AD.
In addition to the traditional Hail Caesar massed battles, the supplement introduces rules for smaller scale engagements between warbands as reflects much of this period. Shield Wall also contains campaign rules and several linked scenarios – from Badon Hill to Brunanburh.
The army lists are included for Limitanei, early and late Saxons, Romano-British, Welsh-Cymru, Irish, Picts, Gaels, Vikings and Irish-Norse."
This sounds rather awesome, and whilst SAGA II is certainly doing the rounds right now, it's always good to have a variety of options, opening up the kind of systems you can play with on the tabletop. Bear in mind, there's no reason you can't look to pick and choose rules from different games and try something in that regard.
You can get your hands on a Massive Bundle of Dark Age goodies thanks to Warlord Games too.
This nets you your Vikings, Saxons, a bunch of Dark Age Cavalry which could be used for either force and of course the rulebook as well. The perfect way to start might be to get just one of these forces however and work up through skirmish games towards the mass battle conflicts.
Here we have Vikings...
...and the Saxons. I really like that each set comes with the plastic models, heroes and the collection of transfers too.
Are you tempted by the bundles and the Shield Wall rules which draw on Hail Caesar as a basis?

interesting bundle but I would have preferred to see more of the Gripping Beast sprues over the old Wargames Factory ones. Nothing against the old Wargames Factory sprues, they have some nice weapon options and make for some interesting and dynamic poses (great for moving and charging whereas the bulkiness, the solidity of the GBP plastics make for cooler shield walls if you ask me). Granted, some difference in size, more weight to the Gripping Beast sprues making the Wargames Factory ones look a tad flimsy in comparison. For the price, the complete set looks great, I’d just be tempted… Read more »
I’m kinda surprised to see the Gripping Beast figures there a all
awkward situation for Warlord – despite having the Wargames Factory sprues, Gripping Beast have stolen a march on them so to speak what with the arrival of the new cavalry box…
Warlord have sold Gripping Beast figures for a while. They also (or did) sell Perry and Conquest Games boxes as well.
I wonder what rules for warbands means. Not an obvious fit for this rule set.
From memory Warbands in HC are troops that form deep formations and is a special ability and often have the wild fighters special rule which means there good on a first charge of the battle then settle into normal fighting stats after that
As they conveniently have free postage on orders of £20. I pre ordered a copy. I’m interested to see the rules for the smaller engagements as they may be good for club night.
I need all of this just ’cause.
Nice figure’s
Anyone know why this is “volume 1”? What else is coming?
Volume 2? 😉
