Fifty Shelves Of Grey; What Is Games Workshop Planning?
March 28, 2019 by brennon
Ok, so of all of the announcements to come out of AdeptiCon this week the one that was most intriguing was this Fifty Shelves Of Grey teaser that Games Workshop put out...
This is clearly a situation which we all do actually struggle with, getting armies converted from grey plastic to finished and painted armies. But, what on earth could Games Workshop be adding to their Painting & Hobby range which helps make this process easier?
Unless they're suddenly going to start offering a painting service or...by the gods, pre-painted miniatures (or your own Duncan), I can't quite get my head around what they have planned here.
What do you think?

Pre painted minis?
GW branded airbrush?
No more grey plastic only coloured ones?
In-Store paintservice?
Or even…. GW Paints in dropper bottles?!
No idea what they are planning. Coloured plastics, but that hardly gets things painted quicker.
Great teaser though, these are ones they are doing are such great fun.
It’s definitely some change/addition to their paint range. The logo at the end of the video is the Citadel Paints logo so I doubt it’s coloured plastics. Pre-painted miniatures? I’m not sure that’s a route GW wants to pursue as I suspect their paint range makes a decent amount of money, plus they really sell the whole “Hobby” aspect of their products.
Definitely the most interesting announcements they have made though, in my opinion at least.
I agree, but the tools and brushes are also part of the citadel brand or maybe it is a painting guide. For the paints, they replace the word citadel with the paint name and switch the colour of the logo depended of the type of paint. For example base paints have a red logo, shade green. Yellow is used on texture paint bottles and spray cans. Could still be just the normal citadel logo without the text citadel, but somehow i get the fealing once they reveal it, we will see this outro again, but with the product name added.… Read more »
Doesn’t Dust offer its minis in various states of being painted, including just undercoated and almost fully done? (Obviously at different prices.)
It does yes, could be something similar.
They’ve said that it’s a new tool, so I don’t think it’ll be pre-painted minis or coloured plastic, or even a switch to dropper bottles. No idea what it could be.
Could well be an airbrush then in that case?
Possibly; if so, question is will it be better than the last one they made (and will it be handflamer shaped too)?
I’d go with the airbrush release as well, however a bit more “professional” than the last one they did. This time with a compressor, but at the “lower” end of the spec range (ofc with a GW price “premium”).
Ugh! If its an airbrush system they can hang it up already. Thinking about how Harder&Steenbeck have a deal with Vallejo for getting into the hobby they’re already beaten. If they go low end and try something with, say.. Paasche, it might be in their price point for mass production. Above that is Badger (their Sotar 2020 is sweet and their Patriot 105 is solid all around for use) and I doubt highly that they’d drop their standards for mass production. Iwata I doubt would jump into bed w/ GW as they’re known (atleast from my experience) for high quality… Read more »
The Iwata Neo is a great starter brush and well within an acceptable price range for GW. It’s the compressor that’s likely to be the killer.
Army Dip.
A painting service would be great.
I love how weird and absurd their commercials/teaser trailers can be.
Grey no more … ’cause everything will be coloured plastic with big stickers 😉
Or April Fools’ joke ?
It is *that* time of the year …
My guess would be colour primers. I was thinking about pre-primed minis, but they would have to remove mold lines first and it would interfere with assembly.
Pre-primed is a decent guess I’ve heard, otherwise I’m going with their own take on dip/quick shade.
GW colour matched brush pens was my first thought. Basically like colouring in once you prime your model. Something like these — https://www.amazon.co.uk/Watercolour-Painting-Flexible-Colouring-Calligraphy/dp/B01N102OR7/ref=asc_df_B01N102OR7/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=234987689465&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4868482660422634944&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007288&hvtargid=pla-347900627719&psc=1
Playmobil once had a colour range in the 80s where kids could colour their own figures with felt pens. If GW does something similar now, I hope for much better quality. At least for mass painting an option to consider. (Apocalypse on the horizon!!!) Anyway, the commercial is way too elaborate to come up with ordinary coloured plastics or an airbrush later.
Yeah there’s plenty of professional grade brush pens, not sure if it’s even close to what GW have planned of course but looking forward to finding out.
The ad is as funny as could be. I’ve seen a similar meme several times.
Can’t help but think it’s pre-painted minis. Recently on XLBS Warren asked about the future of miniature gaming and I said pre-painted minis. If it is, it’ll be massive
Cloned “Peachy & Duncan” set to chain to a table and paint your stuff for you….. Sort of like the “John”, Warren has on Beast’s of War.
I think this is going to be a rebranded “GW or Citadel” airbrush, theres been talks about the possibility for a while and there’s plenty of sources they could obtain one from that would allow them to make a strong profit.
I cant see pre-paints being a thing in their eyes.
Dropper Bottles would go crazy but I suspect if they were ever going to listen on that theyd have done it already?
Some whites that aren’t complete garbage?
Warbanner Grey primer
Lol
