Become Epic Superheroes In FFG’s Marvel Champions LCG
August 1, 2019 by brennon
Fantasy Flight Games has been showcasing all of the awesome stuff that is coming your way over the next year or so. First, and most important, is the epic Marvel Champions LCG which has you playing as superheroes tackling dangerous villains.
Marvel Champions: The Card Game is going to have you playing as a team of heroes going up against a particular villain who is looking to bring their schemes to fruition. In some of the demo games, they played a team of Spider-Man, Iron Man and Black Panther were facing down Rhino as he smashed his way into a S.H.I.E.L.D facility.
As a fully cooperative game, your focus is to bring down your villain whilst also looking to stop the villain either taking your team down or completing their schemes. The game also scales up from one to four players so the villains you'll be facing get more health dependant on the number of you sitting down at the table.
Much like with other LCGs (living card games) from Fantasy Flight, each hero comes with their own deck of cards which is full of upgrades, support, event and more which are focused towards your particular character.
One of the cool things about the game is that you can either play as the superhero version of yourself (for example Iron Man) or as your alter egos like Stark or Peter Parker. This determines how the villain will act against you when they get stuck into the fighting.
The core set for the game is a bit of a departure from existing cooperative LCG sets by them. Instead of just focusing on two-players it is fully set up for four players right out of the gate.
This seems like a really fun and exciting dive into the Marvel universe from Fantasy Flight Games and really, it seems about time that something like this came out from the guys at Fantasy Flight Games. If you're interested in gameplay you can see a full run-through of the game thanks to Team Covenant...
This seems fun, quick and exciting, just what you'd want from a Marvel-based game.
Gaming Mats
To support the release of the core set later this year the team at Fantasy Flight Games has also put together a series of different mats for players starting with the big gaming mat which helps you set up the game.
This is then built on by a range of hero-based mats that you can use to suit your preferred hero. You have Black Panther, She-Hulk, Spider-Man, Iron Man and Captain Marvel to choose from right off the bat.
I love the artwork that they have chosen for the characters, drawn right from the comic books, and the backgrounds look suitably clean so that you can read cards nice and easily. I am very excited about this and can't wait to see more about the game in the coming months.
I love cooperative games and I love Marvel so this is a perfect combination.
What do you think?

They are really sinking their teeth into miniatures wargaming… But didn’t Knight Models have the rights to this sort of thing or am I confusing things as comics aren’t part of my life 😉
This is an LCG, no miniatures. Although there is a miniatures game if you check the news flow 😉
Ah, I just watched the FFG live stream VOD and they announced “Marvel Crisis Protocol Miniatures Game” and confused the two.. my bad. (Still, FFG makes another Miniature game…)
As @brennon said, the miniatures game is a different beast. But yes, Knight Models did have the rights but then had to scrap their Marvel line as their DC Universe Miniatures Game was introduced, so they haven’t had a Marvel minis game for a while now.
So FFG is really putting that Marvel license to use. And seeing that LCGs are they expertise and breard and butter I would say that this could be potential buy. If not then at least I might buy those game mats (Captain Marvel and She-Hulk) for other card games.
Have they got Thanos to play all the heroes versus Thanos. Or will a special infinity version be down the road.?
I’m sure Thanos will pop up in an expansion
The expansions will include Scenario Packs(new villains), Hero Packs(new heroes) and Deluxe Expansions which will include linked scenarios, new villains and new heroes. One of the tree types will drop each month with the expansions happening about twice a year. As Ms. Marvel, Captain America, Green Goblin, and The Wrecking Crew have been announced I’m guessing the first expansion will be X-Men. Probably no Thanos until 2021-2022
Seems a lot of people are now getting demos of this LCG
Crabbok has one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2roL_DQp-E
He shows the cards to the camera a lot more than happened in the TC one, including the turn summary resource card.
