New Edition Of SAGA Coming 2018 From Studio Tomahawk
September 18, 2017 by brennon
A new edition of the popular game SAGA is on the way in 2018 from the folks at Studio Tomahawk. Take a look at the teaser trailer they put together above...
It looks like we're going to be getting a SAGA Universal Rulebook which will cover all periods of history and give us a set of rules that govern all manner of different factions from the Ancient period all the way up to the Medieval period.
As well as dealing with Historical adventures they are also looking to expand things to include a Fantasy element as they mentioned Beowulf, a character and world people have wanted them to explore for a long time.
It will be interesting to see what of the basic SAGA rules are carried over into the new edition of this game and what they do with the Battle Boards if anything. They could just use this as an opportunity to tweak and improve on what they already have.
As well as the main rulebook it appears we'll also get the Book Of Battles which will include scenarios and additional rules for you to use in your games. This is all sounding very good indeed and we're looking forward to what Studio Tomahawk can bring to the table.
What do you think of the news?

I wonder if Mierce Miniatures know their artwork is being used in this video? :s
Maybe the orginal artist still owns the copyright
I’d be surprised if that were the case. Stef usually does work for hire and it’s unlikely that Mierce would comission him for their signature piece of art and let him keep the copyright. It may be a tease of a working relationship between ST and Mierce that will see their minis and setting given SAGA rules.
That would be an incredibly expensive way to play Saga!
Ooooh. Also, who makes that werewolf model? It looks awesome!
It is the mantic werewolf
thanks for that! 😀
I haven’t played Saga but it’s kind of interested me. Watching that video though, ie Fuedal Japan a new setting?
There have been fan-made boards before but never anything official. It looked like the new SAGA will be much broader in its settings.
In which case this could be something I buy into. I have been looking for a set of rules to base an Elderscrolls game in and with a broad range of settings this could be the one.
Also as I have mentioned elsewhere, I quite like what I call “Hollywood Historical” themes. Games based only loosely on history with more focus on a story set within a period rather than on historicity. I think Saga could let me do that
My hopes for the new edition are: 1) It’s available and reasonably priced here in the US. First edition SAGA is REALLY hard to find here and if you do track down an online retailer its $40-$50 for the small softcover rulebook. No local shops in my area want to, much less can, support the game. 2) Get rid of the SAGA dice! I know it’s the big gimmick for SAGA but the dice are just one more hurdle for building the player base. I know you can use regular D6s but it adds an extra complication to the game… Read more »
The custom SAGA dice were never required for play, they only meant you did not have to memorize the matrix of results. If you were good with that standard D6’s work fine.
Agree with you on the availability in the States. Hard to promote the game when you cant get hold of it.
I agree on availability and pricing, on both rules and the dice. But I really hope they wont remove the dice, they add some more “feel” to it I think!
Exciting!
Will definately pick this up
I’m excited for this! Hopefully the rules are a bit clearer and streamlined. I feel there’s a bit left unsaid in the rules. But I’m only two games in, but it’s a lot of fun!
