The University Of Edinburgh has previewed a new expansion coming out for Lion Rampant players called The Crusader States which has been designed alongside the original game designer, Daniel Mersey.
Lion Rampant: The Crusader States // University Of Edinburgh
This particular expansion delves into the Middle East and follows the path of the Crusades between 1097 and 1291. As well as covering their alliances and fights against the people of the Middle East it also delves into the infight between the different Crusader States as well. Here is a little look at what's inside...

This means you'll find options for the different armies, details on the period itself, optional upgrades like "magical" or talismanic items as well as twelve army lists with unique features and abilities. This then develops into a series of scenarios allowing you to play out these clashes in either an accurate fashion or perhaps as a "what if" scenario.
It's neat to see the University Of Edinburgh getting involved like this and bringing game design and history together into one package. It's certainly a really fun way to learn about a period of history and become invested in it.
Are you tempted to give this a go when it releases in the near future?

What plastic miniatures can people recommend for Lion Rampant?
Depends on what army you want to play… going from the army lists in the contents… Fireforge have a Medieval range of Crusaders and Militant Orders. They also have some Mongols. Gripping Beast do Arabs that might work in those lists.
There are various manufacturers that also do plastic Normans, that could possibly work for the early crusades but you’d need to ask someone who understands these things better than me.
Entry into Lion Rampant is really easy, once you’ve got the book you can do a tremendous amount with just a couple of boxes of plastics. Agincourt lists for example can be done with a single box from Perry Miniatures. For the crusades I appear to have done much the same as Robert, Gripping Beast for the Arabs (heavy cavalry well worth a purchase) and Fireforge for all your Crusader/knightly order needs. Worth remembering, if you have some spare heads from your Arab infantry it’s dead easy to convert more heavily armoured Muslim troops from the Fireforge Sergeants with suitable… Read more »
+1 for Fireforge. They’re a good match for, say Gripping Beast, North Star, etc. and reasonably priced.
Brill! Come as a pleasant surprise to me this 🙂
looks good.
It’s a great system, will definitely grab this
This is on my list to buy.
I’ve enjoyed ‘Lion Rampant’ very much.
Can wait for this one. Used lion and dragon in our local club to help covert some warhammer players to historical mins. My moors have faced off against skeletons and orcs!! On guy went all in and built a French war of the roses army. Easy rules with flexible army list. And not just line up and roll left to right like dbm
