Learn About Early Games Workshop With “Talking Miniatures” Book
June 23, 2023 by brennon
If you've ever wanted to learn more about the early days of Games Workshop and Citadel from the folks that were there then maybe consider diving in and picking up Talking Miniatures, a new book which you can pre-order from Warlord Games.
Talking Miniatures // Shaggy Dog Publishing
Talking Miniatures was compiled by Robin Dews, the former White Dwarf Editor and Design Studio Manager and the old Sales Director, John Stallard who is now head of Warlord Games. It covers the early years of Games Workshop and Citadel Miniatures and what it was like being part of an "eclectic cast of designers, sculptors, artists, rebels and similar non-conformists who in the early 1980s gravitated towards Bryan Ansell and the early Citadel Miniatures team".
Inside you'll find a collection of conversations and interviews exploring the first edition of Warhammer Fantasy Battles, Rogue Trader, the design philosophy behind the first Space Marine and the painting style that made Warhammer the world that it was back in the day.

As well as the stories about Games Workshop, there are also plenty of images looking at the work that has been done by these luminaries of the wargaming world over the years. So, you'll get to learn more about the Perry twins for example (above).
What's also neat is that this book also got access to a lot of personal collections thanks to those who got involved and there are some amazing looks at artefacts and miniatures that might be getting their time in the sun for the first time.

What's nice about the pre-orders available on the Warlord Games webstore right now is that there are two variants for you to choose from. You can pre-order the regular version of the book which comes signed by the authors. There is also a limited version of the book which comes signed by the authors and interviewees. Make sure to get involved as soon as you can if you're looking to get that one!
Will you be picking up this book and delving into some wargaming history?

Oh, this one looks very nice. It would go well on the shelf next to my copy of Ian Livingstone’s Dice Men. I’d probably go for the standard version though.
…and preordered.
Man I really want this, been following the facebook group, but 55quid for a book is going to take some juggling
Damn that was fast. I just checked my email to see this and popped over here on a whim to see coverage. Good show for being Benny-boy @brennon on the spot.
It looks great apart from the price which with no doubt while fair for the research and its creation is never the less off putting
Looks like an interesting book to have a look at.
Just go over and watch “The Painting Phase”. LOTS of interviews with early GW Staffers and Sculptors that you wouldn’t normally see (plus GW wouldn’t interview this load of Grognards for this book 😀 ).
