Finally! Dwarfen Pre-Orders For Warhammer: The Old World
July 15, 2024 by brennon
Games Workshop are FINALLY taking pre-orders this weekend for Warhammer: The Old World and the Dwarfen Mountain Holds. They are going to be getting a bevvy of plastic and metal releases for those looking to build a Fantasy army for use in The Old World.
Dwarfen Mountain Holds Battalion // Warhammer: The Old World
Shop Warhammer: The Old World @ Store.OnTableTop
Leading the way is the Battalion box which comes with the basis of a Dwarfen Mountain Holds army. If you don't have access to these plastic kits then you'll be able to get your hands on thirty-two Dwarf Warriors (which can be armed with hand weapons and shields or great weapons) and thirty-two Quarrelers who can also be built as Thunderers. They are then supported by two Gyrocopters which can also be built as the Gyrobomber if you prefer. You just need to add some characters to this and you should be good to go.
Expanded rules for the Dwarfs come as part of Arcane Journal: Dwarfen Mountain Holds. This is not needed to play your Dwarf army if you already have the big blue book that was released a while ago. This instead comes with bonus background and rules for those who want to get a bit more in-depth.
Arcane Journal: Dwarfen Mountain Holds // Warhammer: The Old World
The Arcane Journal comes with new rules, background lore and scenarios. There are also three named character for you to choose from and rules for special units like the Goblin Hewer as well as some Dogs Of War. You will also find two Armies Of Infamy for you to build including a Royal Clan and the Expeditionary Force. As this is Dwarfs, you'll also get new Runes and Runic Tattoos for you to choose from.
You will also be able to get a host of accessories for your Dwarfs. You can get the Transfer Sheet for use on shields and banners plus a set of dice and your reference cards which could be handy when getting stuck into battles at the tabletop.

I do quite like the dice set and the stone texture that it has alongside the gold inlay. The reference cards would also be very handy and unlike some of the other modern Games Workshop games, it doesn't seem like they're going to be out of date within a few weeks.
Additional Dwarfen Mountain Holds Releases
As well as those core releases, you will also be able to buy a bunch of additional miniatures in both plastic and Forge World resin. Leading the way is the Dwarf Lord With Shieldbearers.
Dwarf Lords With Shieldbearers // Warhammer: The Old World
This is a double miniature set which comes with a Thane on foot and then a King who three bodyguards are carrying on the back of a shield. They have interchangeable weapons so you can decide who gets the hand weapon and shield and who gets the great weapon.
On the Forge World resin side of things, you can also get the Dwarf Thane With Handgun On Oathstone.
Dwarf Thane With Handgun On Oathstone // Warhammer: The Old World
This comes with a Dwarf Thane who has planted their Oathstone and is not for moving. They can take potshots at the enemy and the Oathstone also means that the unit they are with can stave off panic. One of the big miniatures from Forge World though is the younger Ungrim Ironfist.
Ungrim Ironfist // Warhammer: The Old World
The Slayer King ventures out from his halls with the Axe Of Dargo and the Slayer Crown, ready to carve apart monsters. This represents Ungrim when he is a little bit younger, way before the era of Karl Franz and The End Times. He looks great and there are some nice nods to the older miniature. It will be great to see him at the head of a Slayer-themed army, marching into battle to bring down the deadliest beasts in The Old World.
You can also get your hands on a selection of older miniatures in a variety of different materials, be it plastic, metal or Forge World resin.
Dwarf Mercenaries // Warhammer: The Old World
You can get the likes of the classic Dwarf Mercenaries from way back in the day or the Goblin Hewer which made a name for itself during the Storm Of Chaos. It's a shame that it isn't tied to Malakai Makinson.
Goblin-Hewer // Warhammer: The Old World
There is also a wonderful set for those who like their dioramas or perhaps particular scenario-based play. You could have some Goblins chasing down a cart full of Bugmans! A classic scenario.

More of these miniatures can be checked out on the blog post from Warhammer Community. If you're looking to get your hands on an Old World army of Dwarfs you've got plenty of options from Games Workshop.
Could you be tempted by these miniatures for Warhammer: The Old World?

Can’t get more Old World than the Dwarf thane: a square base on a square base!
Ye gawds some of those are the old Marauder Dwarfs from the 80s. Utter classics!
Classics that will be at home fighting my Orcs and Goblins – finally a worthy opponent!
classics at new prices 😉
And, ironically, probably cheaper than the secondary market’s stupid “oldhammer” price!
I’ve come to grips with the cost of the Old World stuff. I literally paid $60 for a three mini pack of Forest Goblin Shamans (one shaman, two heroes), which had a $10 price sticker still on it. And I’m sure I paid about $6 for back when it was “new”. That was like 30 years ago. Movies were a nickel, and a pack of smokes a dime! Two candy bars and a Coke cost a quarter! I tell ya, it’s not like the old days.
?
still with the old price sticker ?
*ouch*
they do like to rub it in …
I do understand liking (some of) the old models (like the dwarves with pikes in this news item), but there’d be no way I would want to pay whatever GW is asking for them as there are so many more choices available with some indie companies even doing a modern take on the classic style.
But the indies are asking … for me .. what are high prices for the same kind of minis. Nothing compares to “the old days”. I could buy a house – a nice one, mind – for $100,000. Now? $500,000 is a starter home. I purchased my nicest home for $800,000 before my divorce. Who needs that? P-shaw, I say!
I really don’t have any problem with modern GW prices. It’s just … today. Know what I mean, eh?
I was super excited about this release… until I went on the pre-orders page this morning… I’ll be sticking with indie STL companies. Those prices are shocking
